grinding PTO

I have a Ford 2010 that makes a gear grinding noise when I try to engage it. The noise is a bit like a missed shift in a non synchro trannie. The tractor had an implement on it where the PTO was left engaged all the time, whether it was running or not. That implement is now off. What is this noise and what is the repair? Perhaps I am engaging the PTO in an improper manner?

Thanks

Is it a 2010 or a 2110? I have not heard of a 2010.What transmission does it have? Does it have live power or Independent Power. Big Difference. Live power uses a two stage clutch. The clutch pedal has to be pressed all the way down to engage the lever or to stop the PTO from turning. Could be stuck or out of adjustment. IPTO can be engaged or disengaged without the clutch.

You are correct, a 2110. Sorry. It is a non synchro trannie. Not sure what you mean by live power or independent. The trannie has two shifters, one for the main and the other the transfer. Another point is, while the tractor is running I can spin the PTO shaft by hand. All the other tractors I use I can only rotate it about a quarter to an eighth of a turn. I do not know if this is significant, but just mention it. You can start the tractor with the PTO engaged. I'm not sure if this is an indication of power or independent or just a dangerous condition. You may be correct that I am not fully depressing the clutch. I'll try again tomorrow.

thanks again.

Your Ford 2110 has live pto or two stage clutch. This means that the pto clutch is controlled by the last few inches of the clutch pedal at the bottom of the stroke. If you push the pedal down real slow you should be able to feel the extra force needed to work the pto clutch. You need to hold the clutch pedal down all of the way for a few seconds before engaging the pto, Then release it slowly or you can damage the tractor or your attachment. If it is not operator error then your clutch might just need adjusted. You did not state how many hours where on your tractor, So it is hard to tell if your problem is wear related. This tractor was built for Ford by Shibaura in Japan. It is a simple tractor similar to Yanmar.
