Ford ranger won't start when hot and has no power?

My 94 ranger with the 2.3L 4 cylinder is acting strange lately. If it's cold it starts right up and runs fine but if I go in somewhere for a few minutes and come back out, it won't start until it has cooled off for 5 to 15 minutes. On top of that, it had no power when I drove out to my land. I couldn't keep it at 100km/h even if I took it out of O/D and into drive. It was totally gutless. Luckily I made it to my land and got my other truck. It's a 2500 with a 6 L and really sucks the gas but at least it has power. Anyone have an idea what to check on the ranger? I've heard a fuel pump going might cause that? Thanks for your help. Dave

It sounds a lot like a fuel pressure regulator. Remove the vacuum line and see if fuel is present in the line, if so the diaphragm has a leak and is putting fuel into the intake causing a flooding problem when hot. It probably idles a little on the rough rich side too.

Check your fuel pressure. In the 20 years I have been a professional tech, I've never seen a timing belt jump a cog. They either strip off a section or break.

Timing belt ?NO ,as Brian said , they usually fail 100% . Fuel pressure is one of the leading causes of drivabilty problems . Not cracking a line and "yep ,theres fuel " .It has to be exactomundo on the money ! . When is last time fuel filter was replaced ? Out of sight out of mind . I see alot of them that are original on vehicles with 100,000 on them, and they wonder why fuel pumps fail ?

I've had a few fuel pumps fail on a Ranger and I've yet to see one behave as described. When they fail, they plain up and die. No start. No run. No go nowhere. Same if the filter plugs...

Have you checked the catalytic converter? Sometimes they will be free enough to run cold, but close up when hot. Loosen the exhaust pipe at the manifold when it's hot and see if it will start then. HTH.
Good Luck and God Bless
