OT another accident

The supervisor at the wastewater treatment plant in Crystal Mi was killed yesterday morning. He was cutting some braces with a chop saw and the sparks ignited a barrell of waste oil. They said it blew both ends out of the barrel and damaged one corner of the building. When I heard about it yestrday morning, they said he was badly injured, but the paper said this morning that he was DOA at the hospital. Tragic story.

Yep, accidents can be prevented with paying attention and not making sparks with petroleum products around.

It amazes me that more accidents dont happen at gas stations with all the stupid people that exist.

I used to live on the west side of Detroit and work on the east side. ( afternoon shift ) One day I took 8 mile across town. I was going down 8 mile. and I saw a big plume of smoke roll across the road, a couple hundred yards in front of me. As I got up to that area, it was still pretty smokey, but not too bad. I looked to my right, and it looked like a nasty vacant lot, and old service station spot. There were a couple of cinder blocks in the road, I had to drive around, thought it was odd, but went on my way. Westbound traffic had stopped, didn't know why. Next day, found out some guy had been welding on a car, on the lift, and had hit the gas tank. Blew him and his buddy all the way across 8 mile, it's a boulevard. Must have been 300 ft - both dead. Nothing left of the building.

I'm thinking there had to be some gas or something there to. I don't think straight oil would ignite that easily from sparks off a chop saw, unless some oil was directly under where all the sparks went. Dave

rrlund,

Did you leave out some essential facts to the story? I am wondering how did a barrel of waste oil explode

A tragic accident for sure,it is indeed a sad story

That had me scratching my head too,but I don't know if it's some sort of seperation barrel or what. My brother used to be maintenance supervisor for Carson City and he said those barrels give off a smell just like gasoline,so must be some sort of a permenamt fixture at waste water treatment plants.

When I was a kid, I think it was in science book, that if you threw a lighted match in a bucket of gasoline 99 times out of a hundred it would not explode. I do recall a few kids that played with matches and gasoline. Big fires but no explosions. WHY?
