drum mower???

I think this is my kinda mower in the link (seems simple enough). Question is, the website says minimum 28HP for the 165 (which is the most common and best price I have found). Question is, my tractor is 26HP diesel (8N size and not a new compact). Think it could handle it? Biggest place I'd be mowing is 2 acres and the rest are smaller, speed not being a real issue because it would have to be faster and easier to use than the sickle mower. Thanks for any advice.

hey dave i have the 185 model which i normaly run behind my 3000d ford BUT in a pinch i have cut several fields with the mower behind my ole H with three point hitch

I think the main reason for the 28 HP reccomendation is to keep idiots with little light weight tractors from trying to use an implement that will roll their tractor and themselves down a hill. I have a 165 that I use sometimes with a ford 1910 and can cut grass hay in 2nd range 3rd gear, no problems.

I'm on flat ground with the exception of one place that slopes but am smart enough to run the right direction. Tractor weighs 3 times the mower weight and has a wide front. Thinking maybe I should buy one????
Can pick them up for a couple hundred bucks or lass used, guess I could try and see.

Thanks, Dave

I have not had a CCM but I have had two others. I liked the idea of having the gearbox up in the air away from the rocks that might be hit by a disc mower gearbox. I saw one that had a little tweak in the gear case that still ran perfectly OK. The down side is as others have said, the weight. You may want to consider a Quick Hitch to go with it, and as it swings to the rear for transport you may want some additional front weight in order to keep the tractor headed where you want it to go.

Dave, I have that model of CCM's drum mower, I couldn't be happier with it. I have pulled it with a D-10 Allis, 4th gear low, in a smooth, relatively flat field. The thing does get a little hairy on some of the hills I have, so I went with my D-12, same HP, just a wider stance, also get yourself a coupla rear wheel weights, and put both on the left wheel. Hook it up in transport position, and lift it, and see if you need to weight the front. Whatever you do, don't use a quick hitch gismo, it moves all that weight backwards. As far as repairs go, I think the only thing I've busted in 3 years is a grease fitting.

Thing is, I bought my little tractor at just the right time I guess...They sell for 3 times the price now. I like it and hate to get rid of it. My baler manual says min 25 HP so if the mower works, I can keep my tractor and save the replacement money. Worse case, I can have someone do the mowing but don't like begging.

Are you mowing for hay, or just mowing? If just mowing, you'd be happier with a bush-hog type, because the drum mower puts the grass in a very tight swath rather than dispersing it (one of the drawbacks of drum mowers- you just about have to ted the hay after mowing, to get it to dry). Course, I guess if you mow it often, the grass will be short and it won't matter as much.
