My 05 F150 has 255 65 17 tires that are about done. I bought some used tires that are 225 65 17. I didn't realizr there was much difference in the size until I got home. The tires are about 1 1/2 inches shorter in height, and about 1 1/2 inches less width. Does this mean the actual height difference will be about 3/4 inch. I can't use them on the rear, because of gas milage, and spedo difference. Will there be a problem using them on the front? Thanks Stan

Tire height depends on the width (first number), the aspect ratio or sidewall height (second number) and the rim size (third number).

the first number is width in mm, the second number shows the ratio of how tall the sidewall is compared to the width (65% of 255mm).

A 255/65/17 tire would be 255 millimeters wide (10.04 inches) with a sidewall height of 65% of 255mm or 6.53 inches. Remember the sidewall would be counted twice for actual height. The sidewalls (6.53" x 2) plus the rim size (17) would make your tire 30.06 inches tall (high)

a 225/65/17 tire would be 8.86" wide and 28.5" tall. ((8.86" x 0.65) x 2 + 17")

So... the actual height difference would be 1 1/2". (3/4" would be the difference in sidewall height).

As posted if the truck is 4x4 or has 4 wheel ABS (being an 05 I'm sure it has 4 wheel ABS), then you need the same sized tires on all 4 corners. If not it will cause a conflict in the computer and the brakes won't function properly.
