The Worlds Largest Antlers

Hey Guys ,

Here is a hunting trivia question for you as according to the 1996 Book Of World Records .

What is the record antler spread or rack of any living species ever killed ?

I'll give everyone a day or two to post guesses and then I'll post the answer .

There were some record breaking antlers at the middle of a big custody battle several years ago. I think they were valued at around $100,000. Don't know if they were in the Guinness book but that is not the definitive book of world records and has had some errors over the years. Dave

The Cabellas in Kansas City has a large deer display. A lot of fun to go through one of their stores just to look around. There is a store called Gander Mountain in Wichita that has some neat stuff as well, but it pales in comparison to Cabellas.

I dated a girl in college with a huge rack but as I was never able to measure it I cannot attest to its comparitive size.

Dad lives in DesMoines ,had a roadkill deer end up dead behind his house. Antlers scored 208 . Was offered 1500 for them . There was a record buck taken here in Iowa few years ago . I know it was worth close to a Million dollars ,with all the replicas sold and marketing . Big racks are big money . The largest rack ? Maybe Caribu?

The largest antlers came from the largest cervid. It depends if you are measuring weight, or spread. I helped unload the one-time word record moose antlers from the back of a pick-up truck. The spread was close to eight feet, with a four foot width. Truly massive. I think the record has now been broken, but the one I helped with is located at the Card Wildife Museum at Ferris State University. I don"t know of any living animal that has larger antlers than a moose.

I would also guess a moose.. Ive heard of moose antlers approaching 7 feet in width. I don’t think an elk would get that wide. Dunno!

Hanson buck was killed in 1993 and his record I think has been taken by one larger

Vern's Restaurant, Laporte, Colorado (north of Ft. Collins) had (place burned down,and was rebuilt) an irregular rack that (memory from 1990) had 61 individual points and was about 38" across. I think it weighed in excess of 65#. Jim

And The Answer Is ,

According to the 1996 Book Of Records , The largest spread or rack of any living species is 6 ft. 6 1/2 in. from a moose ( Alces alces ) killed near the Stewart River in the Yukon Territory , Canada in October 1897 . The antlers are now on display in the Field Museum in Chicago , IL.
