tool box on tractor

Hey guys need a idea on what to use as a tool box for my ford 2000. It doesn't have one and I looked at my local supply store and they want $30. I must be tight because I hate spending that to throw a few tools in. Tell me some of your inventions. Thanks Mike

Always can use one of them old army ammo cans. Supposed to be water tight. We got a few of them we put on our tractors. Thay work pretty good, just my thoughts, Toby.

I use an electrical box with a hinged cover and lay it flat. It has a gasket in it but that is not really needed for rain with the overhang on the cover. It is around 10" to 12 " square and maybe 3" deep. I made a bracket and attached it right behind the seat which is very handy for the pins etc for hooking up the three point stuff. I found mine at a swap meet and they also can be found on old junked electrical equipment. Just gut out all of the electrical components. They usually are pretty sturdy.

I have a lot of the larger electrical panels from old machines in my garage for storage bins. I clean them out and add wooden or metal shelves.

An old ammo box. That is a great idea. I was just looking at my JD today to see where I can put a tool box. I have several small metal tool boxes, but the lid opening will be wrong. The ammo cans lift straight up. I have a nice flat area next to my feet. I"ll be checking that out tomorrow. Stan

(quoted from post at 18:29:45 04/18/10) Good idea, where can I find one. Thanks for your input Mike

Army Surplus Stores have them, but they're more expensive than they used to be. Around here they want $12 to $15, best I remember.

I don't know where else you would find them.

Which 2000 do you have? 3 cylinder or 4 cylinder?
If you have a 3 cyl 2000 you can mount some sort of a box on the two big bolt holes on the side of the tranny. A lot of guys have them mounted on the fender but I never liked listening to all the rattleing.

Sometimes we dont even attach it to the tractor, this way when your equipment breaks down, you can carry her back there instead of walking. they set nice in the rock rack or on the floor panels. Toby.

Take a couple ammo cans (or equal) and put an emergency tool kit in each to take with you when you'll be farther than XXXXX from the shop. Otherwise you'll just collect junk.

My $.02.

Anybody remember the old, old mail boxes? Not the kind we have now days, these the lid hinged in the back and opened up towards the back, just like a tool box. The one I have is very heavy galvanized steel. We made brackets and mounted it on the ladder up to the engine platform on our Gleaner. It was wonderful, and the way the lid was designed it would not leak. Plus even had a little shelf big enough to hold a few coins so you could leave change for the mailman.
