Different Twist On Tillage In Central NY

I posted a week ago about my neighbor Isaac plowing. One thing that stuck in my mind after watching him a while was the LACK OF THE SOUND of a tractor engine. Any of you who have got hours of seat time working the soil can identify with the sound of dirt being sheared and ripped open by a plow or the ring of a disc blade scrapping over a rock. Picture this in your mind without the roar of a tractor. just the sounds of the implement engaging the soil.

Hi Adirondack guy: I've heard it... some years ago. there is also the squeak of the harness on the horses plus the soft clop-clop of their hoofs. A real trip back in time for some. Thanks for posting that very good picture. ag

Well there is much to be said for your statement but i've looked at such a plow rig often when in Amish Ohio and I remember that there "Was" an Engine involved with one of these Horse drawn Plowing contraptions. How else would the hydraulic system to raise the plow bottoms work. granted the engines are not loud but they still make an engine sound. The engines i most often saw at plowing events were Honda and some makes of German diesel engines, probably in the 20-30 H.P. range powering hydraulic pumps. That said I agree that it is a different atmosphere when the Engine noise is gone and a plow is lifted with a wheel clutch .Dirt turning, the smell of fresh sod turned,Occasional noise from the plow hitting a rock,Heavy breathing of the horses, sounds of harness and hoof beats, and an occasional fart from Old bess creates a long gone " Farm "sound which most will never hear but many can remember and can still be seen as routine in old order Amish Country.

Hi John I posted several detailed pics. of this rig last week under A Different Pace Of Plowing in Central NY. The fore cart has a ground driven hyd. pump and an acculmulator to supply hyds. to this rig.

Thanks for the update: Now that is something I have not gotten to see so far. I only get back to Holmes County Ohio every other year or so . I am amazed the adaptions the Amish come up with to avoid having a rubber tired machine to do their farming with. I would really like to see a fore cart with a ground driven power accessory.

My dads happiest day was when he sold his last team of horses. Was born in 1911 and raised on a farm.
If I can remember right sold the horses in 1947 or 8. Replaced by a 46 JD B and on old D.
