Why do they use oil

My dad always said his Ford 9600 would use alot of oil the first day out for spring tillage - after that very little. Wondering why this is - I've observed this on some of my diesel engines as well. Is this normal? What causes the consumption and what causes it to go away? In my experience it seems to be when pulling hard (tillage tractor) when it became my #2 for planting and spraying - very little if any useage. These tractors see zero (or very little) winter use.

Very simple. After one has sat for say 4 months the rings are sticking just a little and also from condensation there is a small amount of rust in the cylinder so it takes an hour or 2 to warm up enough to unstick the rings and also polish off the rust so as to have nice shiny bores again

There may be condensation & unburnt fuel in the oil from not running hard. The oil level is good but after working it hard for the first day, it boils out the bad stuff & the oil level is low. Fill it up & you are good again. Years ago I started working my Farmall H the first day in spring. Pretty soon there was a lot of smoke coming from the breather. After a few rounds it was back to normal.

I agree with old. We had two 656 IHs that did that. One was used with the loader some in the winter and one sat thru the winter mostly. Both of them after the first good day working in the field would use about a quart of oil. After that they never used any and this was every spring. I don't think it was so much rust but rings that kind of stuck from not running at the higher rpm's.

Every spring on the first time out discing or plowing with heavy clothing on, had to you know what every few rounds. Rest of the day normal, rest of the season, normal. I was only 15 and had no plumbing problems, but the first day every spring??

For the reasons Old has listed, I had a pretty smart electrician/mechanic (he owned his Grandpa's restored WD-45, in mint condition) tell me one time that it is better to run/work an engine in the spring for a few hours, then change the oil for the rest of the season. Good advice for tractors, lawnmowers, boats, etc.
