Hay Fertilizer

Just fertilized the hay fields. I put 250 lbs of 19-19-19 on about 3-4 acres of timothy, another 100 lbs about another acre of mixed grass. Light application I know, but it"s my first time fertilizing and I didn"t want to burn the field.

At least your using something. I took over 2 hay fields (80 acres) that were hay for about 14 years, never really got fertilized and when I got the soil test results back there was a single nutrient that was in the double digits. Go pull yourself some soil tests, it will give you something to base next years application on and you can see if your nutrient levels are going up or down.

250 lbs for 4 acres was just a taste, you may see an improvement but not much. 250 lbs per acre, would have been better money spent and seen a dramatic improvement.

Back when I was making/bagging granular fertilizer at WRGrace, I was told that the 4-16-4 was a blend specifically made for hayfields...hard to bag because it was pretty much a powder rather than a granule.

Would be better to take soil samples and send to lab and find out what is needed. May need some Micro nutrients. Tests are money well spent.

I'd say that 47.5 units won't burn anything.

In all seriousness, a soil test only cost about $10 and can save you or keep you from waste'n thousands.

Your grass should green up real nice after the next little rain.

Good luck.

Several folks have given you good advice about taking a soil sample.

They're not very expensive and provide good information on the minerals needed for your field.

Visit with your County Extension Agent concerning soil samples and "typical" fertilizer applications in your area.

I forget if the UK lab is $5 or $10, ether way it's a great deal with the price of fertilizer, and I can just drop the samples off at the county extension office. If you want bbq in O'boro go to old hickory, the other stuff on the buffet at Moonlight is ok but I can find better meat at the gas station up the road from my house.
