Looking for a newer pickup and came across a 98 F250 4wd in the paper for 3600. Called the guy and it has the 5.4 engine and 140,000. It is the one with the 1/2 ton looking body but is a 3/4 ton. Did a little searching on it and it is priced a bit higher than trade in but i havent looked at it yet, plan on going tommorow night. Does anyone one on here have any experience with this year of pick up and the 5.4 engine? Just wondering how many miles they are usually good for before the problems start. Thanks for any replies.

I have some friends who have the 5.4 engines in trucks and they have been very durable. I have a 4.6 in a Lincoln that has been very tough also.

I have the 5.4 in my 03 F150, very tough engine, have 114000 on it now, had the plugs changed and the fuelinjectors flushed at 100000 miles, other that that nothin else has been done to it.

Other than the problem with the spark plugs blowing out due to thread issues in the aluminum heads, the 5.4 seems to be a good engine.

5.4 is a good engine from all i've heard but that also depends who ran it and how it was maintained.
also if its the regular duty truck i think its got oddball 7 lug wheels...hard to put regular heavy duty tires on at a reasonable price.

Moline Guy - very good truck. I have a 97 F-250 4wd. I bought it in '99. The truck has been used to haul a Farmall M that we use in antique pulling. The only things that have been done to it in 11 years are: new exhaust manifolds and front end ball joints. We have 96k on it. The 5.4 pulls the hills here in western NY very well. The truck gets better gas mileage than my wife's jeep Liberty.

If the plugs made it 140,000 miles and have not blowed out I don,t think they will be a problem.

The main reason the plugs blow out is because people change them without the proper tool! Ford has a special tool for that on the 5.4 engines. Hand mine changed at a reputable shop at the 100,000 mile mark, it has 114,000 on it now and its still like the day it came from the dealer.

Wow, my girlfriends Jeep liberty gets 22-23mpg on the highway, I've never heard of a 5.4L truck getting close to that mileage.

That truck may be one of the "light" F250s they made in that period. It is really a heavy duty F150. These trucks had higher GVWR than the 150, but not as much as the regular F250. These trucks do not have the floating axle, pop a rear hub cap and see if the hub sticks out. I have an E250 (van) like this. It is a good truck, but is not built to do what the big 250 does. Depends on what you need from the truck.

It has some electical issues so i decided not to buy it. Thanks for all the information on the pick up.

have a 98 F150 4X4 with 5.4 has 186000mi. on it no trouble except front ball joints & brakes...don't like the 17in tires or the 8mpg it gets pulling my WD-45 puller to pulls...gets 14mpg at 60mph on the highway without trailer...if you can live with the mileage the price is real good...take care ...Kent
