We've all made a bad decision or two in our lives. Well maybe not everyone. But what was your most costly purchase mistake or bad call. Choice of spouse is not included. I think mine might be coming after I get a quote on wednesday. (see my post on tool talk)

Probably not renting the neighbor across the road his 70 acres 5 years ago when he came right to me and asked if I wanted to rent it from him. At the time I did not have big enough equip. and just did not think I wanted to work any harder. Now I have upgraded most of my equip. and could easily handle 70 more acres.

my great uncle wanted to sell me his little cabin at seaside park at the new jersey shore for 12,000 dollars I had the cash but decided not to buy it. Its worth about 400,000 now

Not bidding one more time and letting a quarter section across the fence from me get away. That was five years ago and today it's worth double what it was then. Jim

Let's just say I'll never buy anything again that "needs a tune up".

I fell for that one from somebody I thought I could trust 20 years ago. Never again.

Got in the stock market before 911, lost $68,000.00 in one day. Oh well I really wanted to work till I am 90 anyway. LOL

It's never had the motor touched..... I call b.s. on that now. Crank had already been turned to max and it was grooved. That cost me 5 grand for the tractor and 5 grand for the overhaul, to have a tractor worth 5 grand... Thats got to be it, since I cant count ex'es. That one cost me in the 6 figures.

MAN i Got a bunch of them.. LOL... If the devil could cash in on all the mistakes i have made in my time , a fella could live off the interest ,,. jUST This early Jan. . stood in the Hallway at CGB , merchandiser says 4.08 , on corn today , didn't sell ,nOW i CAN GET A WHOLE 3.40 PER bU. And Last year and the yer before I probably goofed in the same manner with Marketing .... ,starting in 2002 lost 13 mama cows over 4 yrs, MOSTLY bad mineral program and 4 BREACH birthes in 45 days . bUYING bANK STOCKS 20 YRS AGO , THEN DOING IT again IN JUNE 2008 , INSTEAD OF BUYING FORD AT 1 DOLLAR .buying ANY General MOTORS JUNK (owned 6 in my time ), worst vehicle built each year since the early 80s unless you get a v-8 , then ya still got a gas hogg thats a pain to work on ,Srpayed lighning on a cold day and stunted corn (damdest crop ya ever saw , did not know temps needed to be warm ) ... could not talk with the 1st wife right ( man THAT ONE IS A BIGGY , IN REALITY SHOULD MET 2ND WIFE 1ST... lol )... who needs a casino the Way I Gamble ? ..

Costs are not all in yet. Twenty six years ago, bought a couple acres and house. In flood plain of course. Bought an easy dozen pumps and got water in house 3 times. Many, many kilowatts expended in process. Much digging, rerouting drains, new sewer, et cetera. First place I could have a tractor. Grow corn. Deer in the back yard. Swimming pool(was washed out twice, never replaced). Snakes, coons, rabbits, ground hogs. Big barn for welding, engine swaps, whatever.(had to get concrete floor) Lots of good but lots of work and double the initial investment of 50 grand. Count your blessings. I enjoy it but getting too old to do much. Also gas tank in ground rusted out(never settled that one yet)probably can't sell without a fix. Might still bring more than what I got in it. High taxes. I enjoy the place more than a trip to Europe. Praise the Lord.

I never really thought about them. I'm still going though. Most costly mistake dollars wise you ask? Oh, I don't know. Maybe getting up, shaved, showered, dressed, and walking outside each day. That usually always cost me something, and it always seems to add up, but I'm still going so far with just a few cuts, bruises, abrations. Grin.

Sounds like me and the 9600 right now. Old man at the auction said he hadn't used it much the last ten years, just in the garden and around the house a few times a year. I think he meant to say he walked past it a few times a year on his way to the garden. :)

As far as ex's, mine didn't get into six figures. Glad I got out when I did, married 14 months and got way up in the 5 figures.

Buying Retail GM bonds through a broker and now I will likely have to sit on them for many years. GM is run by idiots.

Buying anything from a broker is costly. I do all my investing on the net. Much better returns. I argued with my dad over his GM stock for years. He retired from GM. Kept telling me that "it pays a dividend" Not anymore. He is STILL hanging on to it, hoping it will be worth something. Oh well, I never planned on inheriting anything anyway.

My biggest mistake was not buying a lakeside house in the early 80's - 1.5 acres on a all sports lake - 55K. It was probably worth 500K a couple years ago.

gettin married to my first wife, the divorce war cost me more than any other stipid thing i have ever done, and ive done a few lol

Ouch!!!, 14 months... Mine was 13 years and one kid in the mix. I figured out what the 'rate per' was one time. Made me realize that its way cheaper to rent than own ;).

Not investing my money when I was younger, spent it on good times and "stuff". I'm doing well now, but could be doing much better if I had someone to show how not to just blow it all. Should've bought some property or a least had a savings account. I won't let my kids make the same mistake.

spent a lot of money or big trucks fast cars and one relly fast woman. Just wasted the rest I suppose

I hear ya, same here, just no kids out of that deal.

I figured up "average cost" one time too, tractors were far cheaper!!

Buying a brand new Chevrolet car in 1963. Worst car I have ever even heard of. You name the part and it failed. I sold it to a mechanic who just gave me a blank stare when I told him about all the trouble I had with it. I have never, and will never, own or drive a product that says Chevrolet on it again.

Well, there've been a few.

Not buying two Bristol Bay drift (salmon) fishing permits that were offered to me at $7,500 apiece in 1976. Three years later, they were selling for $250,000 each.

Not buying house and 30 acres adjacent to the industrial park in 1989, for $150,000. Too much money, and not very good ground. But good enough to sell to the industrial commission 15 years later for $1.6 million.

But the worst- not putting two and two together when soon-to-be wife said "I'd like to have a horse after we get married."

I think I married her about 16 years ago, divorced her 10 years ago and yup, she is out there again so definately look out boys. About 5'10" 150 pounds and all attitude, loves to spend other peoples money and has the record to prove it!!! Criminal record that is!

Letting the place I had here in Michigan back in the '80's go for taxes and going back to California to live trying to please (appease really) the wife I had then. She eventually left me anyway and we divorced in 1989..and divorces are never cheap on the husband in this country....especially in California. Thank God I didn't try harder to keep her.....Anyway, after that I had to "start over from scratch"....at 55 years of age and failing health no less. But I made it to retirement...just wish I had the money I had before I married the last wife....Now I've been single for 20 years....I finally learned......

Just like sports, never dwell on a bad play or it will eat you alive. I've had so many bad plays that I would be sitting in a nursing home rocking in a chair with a straight jacket. Enjoy what you have each day! LOL

Well let's see.... The latest that sticks in my craw........Back in February I was spreading gravel on the road and around the house. Lovely little twig on a tree managed to hang on the exhaust flapper of my 2955 while I was backing up. Thought I got lucky because it broke the tail piece on the muffler about 2 inches up.... Figured I could fix that by sawing it off level, turning the tapered end down and weld it back on. No problem.....even got an old canvas tarp to drape the engine ( ya know, to keep the sparks and such from catching anything on fire). Well I got it tacked on and looked good to me so I lay a bead about 2/3rds around. In the few seconds it took me to walk 25 feet to get a step ladder and turn around  the tarp was a blaze and seemed like the flames were 4 feet tall. I guess I was lucky I hadn't taken off my gloves, I grabbed the tarp and little pieces of flame then went everywhere. Got them all patted out and looked to see what damaged was done. Surprised that I found no fire damage. AC wires weren't even damaged. So I thanked the Good Lord and finished the job.

Now, not an hour later the clutch petal started getting soft....Ah Ha! Needs a little fluid in the reservoir. :?: Wasn't as low as I expected so I put a little in and went back to work. Not much different, worked fine for a while and then got soft for a while....and then to the floor. So I figure slave cylinder went bad. Got it to my JD mechanic............open it up...... flywheel damage - crank shaft is "blue" ----- dig further and the thrust bearings are bad along with a list of other things. Last time I saw it it was gutted from the transmission shaft to the radiator.........mechanic shop says it is fixable. Quote is around $16,000.

It is insured......should have let it burn.

  Can't believe what it would cost to replace it with a new one.

Not selling some inherited stocks when they were high (I listened to my brother, who thought they would continue to go up). As it turned out, the idea the company had invested heavily in tanked a few months later and they ended up going bankrupt. Lost about $200K on that fiasco...the stocks are more or less worthless today. OH WELL!!!

Had a chance to buy 2 rentals on the same lot. $130,000. Today their worth more than twice that. Would of helped to be that much closer to retirement. Still kick myself everytime I think about it.

Come on now fellas... I'm just a youngster.. and even I know you can't lose money you never had.. so that property/etc you passed up that has doubled in value didn't cost you any money.. (and if your luck is any like mine, you'd buy it and have to pay someone to take it off your hands later on anyhow)

As for LOSING money.. Farming was my biggest loser.. I didn't lose as much as most, but when you start with next to nothing, can't afford to lose much.. But I'd still give anything to be back in the fields this year..

Hey, but if you loose it all, you have lost less than a "mega-farmer" losses when they lose it all. :D

It will be 5 years tomorrow that I quit my paycheck job to give full attention to the farm. Almost worked myself silly trying to do both. Of course, I'd be better of financially had I kept working and rented the farm to someone else to support but I'm finally living a happier, less stressful life without the steady paycheck.
