when do you guys plant hay

Don't know if I right or not, but I'm gonna lime, fertilize, and add some seed to an allready existing hay field next week. I'll open the disk up and run over it too. Some around here say in the fall & some say in the spring. I'm in south eastern Ohio. Keith

I not in Ohio, but close enough, Southern Michigan. You should plant hay as early as you can to take advantage of moisture. Up here we like to have it in no latter then May 1, I have stretched it past that but if I can get it in in early April then I'm doing that.

I'm in western, Ohio. Depends on the seeding conditions and growing crop. Spring oats are normally seeded in late March or early April with grass seed at same time. Fall wheat, plant the seed in spring as early as snow or gound condition permits or around mid March. With no host crop either spring or fall seeding will work. Fall seeding with tilled ground and seed covered or spring broadcast with no tillage. Main thing to avoid is seeding when weather is hot or dry... Gene

Up here in mid Michigan, most of the alfalfa seeding has already been done about 2 weeks ago. Like hayray eludes to,about as soon as you can get on the ground.

In western Ky, it depends on the type of hay. Cool season grasses in the late fall or as soon as the ground will hold up the equipment in the spring. Clovers get sowed on a snow or frozen ground in Feb. Warm season annuals go on when ever after the first of May.

Just being a smarttie. You don't plant hay you seed or sow it, you plant corn, beans, pumpkins, watermellons, etc. You sow oats, barley, wheat, clover seed, grass seed, or soybeans for hay.
