Joey Chitwood-how did he do it?

Years back a car wrecking/driving show came to our county fair. The best trick was some old 1940-50's car that they would run the right two wheels up a ramp tipping the car up, balancing on the left two wheels and drive it that way teetering for quite a long distance. 1. left two wheels and tires could take all the weight at around 45 degrees. 2. the up side driving wheel never spun out. ??? answer for #2 is weld spider gears in rear end together...broke man's posi trac

i doubt radial tires are capable of that kinda stunt.

I think the tires were severly over-inflated so the sidewalls would not flex, and also the suspension was blocked up to the point the springs didn't move at all.

My dad told me years ago that at one time he drove for him and the cars where no where near stock. He told me they would take the cars apart and weld every weld up 2-3 times longer and then double check every bolt etc. Then do a l0t of other things to the cars and some even had steel plates welded in spots to help do those tricks like in the doors on the left side to help balance them when running on 2 wheels

There is a u tube video making rounds now taken in Japan an they are using new Cadilack cars doing same things. IT is long video.

Google in---Cadillac V Day in Shanghai--- video is there. It takes while to load but impressive!!

Years ago, Sears used to advertise that their shock absorbers were used on his cars. Maybe their tires too, I can't remember.
I read an article on it years ago and they said a lot of it was just practice to get it right.
Anybody remember the James Bond movie where he drove that Mustang like that in Las Vegas to get away from the cops?

they drove those cars, making turns, so the lockup diff might have been a problem. Could they take the emergency brake cable off the left wheel and when coming off the ramp, apply the emergency brake to the upper wheel, forcing it to stop and put all the power on the ground wheel. But they would have to ease off on the gas because the ground wheel would want to go twice as fast wouldn't it?

Whenever I think of Chitwood I remember the time one of his trucks threw a cap while I was following it on I80 in Nebraska. It was in '73 and I had a brand new plym Satellite. A 4000 pound car on bias ply tires doesn't dodge very fast but I managed to keep away from the missiles. Jim

I would guess that they locked the spider gears. That was the way it was done to all the many dirt track stock cars in that time period.
I put a coupla short pieces of rerod and glued them in with the buz box to keep my stock car's wheels turnning the same speed coming out of the corners.
