Is the FFA all across the U.S.?? From east to west coast, north to south, I'm in northern Michigan and never heard of them until I started watching RFD TV about 10 years ago. I would have loved to have been in it when I was in school. I see a lot of tractors restored by FFA groups and wondered why there isnt one up by me.
Thanks
Ryan

National headquarters for FFA are in Indpls. Do a Google search on web, I am sure they will have an informative website. There are several thousand HS kids who attend the annual national convention in Indpls, very hard to get a hotel room in that city during that week. The organization is probably not as popular or visible these days outside of the farming community, a reflection of US society and very sad indeed.

FFA originaly stood for Future Farmer of America.
Due to the fact that over the years it has been mandated by the government to include urban areas and schools. It is all about numbers and percipation. Yes there are a lot of good chapters that really do good things and the students really learn. In our area it is all about showing animals. The object is to win at any cost for the good of the instuctor and the club. I am going to hear from a lot of you for replying. I better shut up.

oh, I thought it was all about me taking grade holsteins from our no-name 400acre dairy farm and kicking a$$ over those big shot farms, that was really fun, made some of those purebred dairy farmers mad as he11! The best I did was get 3rd in state sr. yearling out of 52 head at the minnesota state fair.

its all about money in our local chapter...if your momma and daddy cant buy you champion blood to raise ,kid aint got a icecubes chance in hell of placing...when i was in 4H years ago there was a local rancher that would let us come in and take our pick of the crossbreeds he had...object was to start everybody on a level playing field and see who did the best job raising their beef.

At our county spring livestock show there was a cow that would not fill the way she should. They placed a hose down her and filled her. This is banned and reason for getting thrown out of a big show. Why did the insructor let them get away with it? Money and fame $1500 premium money that is why.

I was chapter president back in the day. Got my State Farmer Degree. I was kinda disapointed to learn at the Farm Bureau County Meeting last fall that there is only one chapter left in Montcalm County. That one is through the Career Center at the Community College. We used to have good times competing against all the other chapters in the county in skills contests. I went to the State Skills Contest one year in the Ag Mechanics Contest. Was a delegate to the State Convention one year. Had my picture in the local paper with Miss Michigan after that one. GOOD TIMES!

Amen to that statement , As a former chapter secretary I can attest to the AMERICAN FFA founded in 1928, The words stated at the beginning of each meeting , "from Alaska to Purto Rico , and from MAINE to Hawaii proves national..,...When given the Honor and Privilage to serve as Chapter president for 2 consecutive terms.. It always Gave me great pride to end each meeting with the INSPIRING words "LET US BE DELIGENT IN OUR LABORS , JUST IN OUR DEALINGS , AND ABOVE ALL HONEST AND FAIR IN THE GAME OF LIFE.... FELLOW FUTURE FARMERS JOIN ME IN THE SALUTE AND PLEDGE OF ALLLEGIANCE TO OUR FLAG " gavel tap, tap, tap, signaluingall rise as we all proudly said the pledge at the end,.. and cheerfully went on to be good citizens ...

There are about 7,200 FFA chapters across the country. FFA is different than nearly any other school activity because it is "intra-curricular" meaning that students must take at least 1 agricultural education class each year in order to be an FFA member (FFA also has a federal charter from Congress). Although FFA is rooted in farming, it tries to focus on all of agriculutre - food, fiber, natural resources. As for its current success, FFA is nearing a record high in membership with over 500,000 student members.

As an ag teacher myself, I hate to hear about situations where 1 bad FFA advisor gives people a negative opinion of FFA. Most advisors I know are hard working, dedicated individuals that will do anything to help kids learn and be successful.

I was an officer of our chapter a couple of times when I was in high school. FFA was an enjoyable and interesting part of school.

However, on our 20th reunion, a fair number of us agreed that the way our lives turned out we would have been better off to have taken business classes instead.

Whenever I started the opening ceremonies,I always heard,"Mr President,I move we dispense with the opening and closing ceremonies".

We had it here in central MI (Mt. Pleasant) back in '60,s when I was in high school. Where in northern MI are you?

I was the sentinel 25 years ago, I still remember my part to say starting with "through this door pass many friends of the ffa," and so on.

I hear ya! I was in 4H only two years, just long enough to realize that if your last name wasn"t one of three local last names you were wasting your time.

Those three families competed against each other while everyone else needn"t have bothered to show up.
