At one time the cap on the lift-all had a dipstick that hung down into the oil. They break off and fall in, so keep the oil an inch or so below the top of the pipe.

You check the engine oil using the two petcocks on the side of the pan. Oil level needs to be at least at the lower petcock so it drips out. It's too full if it's at the upper petcock. The oil level used to rise from unburnt fuel when they were run on distillate so you'd drain some out of a morning.
