Plowing with R4's ?

Hi, I'm getting a new tractor to do some of the smaller area tasks that my old 1970 MF 1080 is just too big for.

The tractor at the dealer has loaded R4's. It's 50hp, 4wd. I want to plow, disc, run a 6' tiller, spring tooth harrows, cultivator, etc. in soft loamy soil for a vegetable operation.

Should I insist on Ag tires? I like the industrial rims better because they're heavier and wider than those used for the Ag's. Can I get wider Ag tires to fit the R4 rims?

It's the same price with R4's or Ag's, both loaded.

Thanks for any advice,

Troy Boyd

Troy:

You will need Ag tires if you plan to do tillage work. R4s wear well but will not bite like good Ag tires will.

Yes, you can get Ag tires in most R4 sizes for premium cost.

I've got a 50 hp, 4wd with r-4's. The rears are loaded. It doesn't
have great traction in mud but it handles the 2x16" plow well in
4wd. If its wet enough for it to have traction problems working
soil, its too wet to be on the land.

I also use a 10 ft s-tine cultivator. It can't handle my 12 ft disc
harrow in soft soil but is fine when the disc isn't in too deep.

I have tried in 2wd and the 2 x 16 is too much in our soil. The 2
x 16 was originaly used behind a International 585 2wd with ag
tires and using draft control it was just right.

For working in mud I really wish I had ag tires though.

Gosh, I am disappointed. I thought I would see a couple of Caterpillar R4's plowing... Gene, who used to plow with a D4.

In your operation I think that the narrower ag tire would be better for all round field work. R-4s work good on pavement and if traction is not an issue. I would have the dealer put the ag tire and rims on. R-4s sizes are hard to find in ag tires.

IME the R4's don't have the bite that is really needed for tillage. They will want to sit on top more and spin instead of really getting traction.

You want ag tires I don't know where you are going
to use it but if on a hillside R-4's will get you
killed they won't hold like R-1's will. I can take
my tractor on a hillside that a friend can't that
has R-4's.
