horse eating sand

How does it "dump" the feed? Is it in a pan, up in a trough? If so maybe the horse likes its food at a lower level, like it would be if it was eating grass. Maybe that is it's natural position to eat.

If so, Make a wooden box to set on the ground, one that can't be tipped over, and start feeding it on the ground. Just an idea.

Good luck, Gene

Could be something as simply as a lack of minerals in the diet. Horses chew on wood looking for certain minerals but many people just think they are bored. Do you have a mineral block for them to lick on?

It could be worse, Circus.

He could be pounding sand.

Sorry, but I couldn't help myself.

I agree with Gene put the feed in a box or trough that is at ground level, the horse's natural eating position.

A mineral block would also be a good idea, not one of those trace mineral salt blocks, get a real mineral block with calcium and phosphorus. it will also have some A D & E vitamins. Most horses that chew wood and lick dirt are looking for calcium or phosphorus, sometimes both.

You really do need to find a way to keep the feed out of the sand and dirt, This could lead to health issues later in the horses life.
If they breath in to much dust and dirt or sand this can lead to "Heaves" a condition where the horse can take in a full breath but has trouble expelling the air from it's lungs. This can ruin a good performance. Also Ingesting to much sand and dirt can cause an impaction in the bowels which can cause a number problems starting with Colic.
As mentioned in earlier post could be a mineral problem or lack of I should say, Try adding a supplement and the suggestion about lowering the feed box is a good one also.
Good luck hope you get this solved.

(quoted from post at 04:55:27 04/03/10) Horse dumps the feed onto the sandy soil then eats it. Any suggestions how to stop it?

You want to get it away from the sand for sure. Maybe you have a pan that will set inside an old tire?
