I planed some cedar lumber yesterday and offered up the shavings on Craig"s list for free, save me hauling them to the tree farm. thought they worked well for fowl bedding, pheasants, chickens, whatever! Tonight I got an e-mail that said cedar will kill small birds! Anyone ever hear of this?

Yep in the past I have heard all that stuff is good for is bug control around flower beds etc. I know it is not good for horses etc and not real good for birds

Yes it is true, cedar harbors certain bacteria and lets off fumes that can damage or kill there respiratory system which in turn they die....stick with straw or pine shavings, pine being the best because straw harbors mites that aren't good for them either..

May be true of red cedar as it an allergy wood.I have used white cedar savings in the barn and henhouse for 50 years with no problems.
