hey folks,
Have about 7-10 acres to mow (in 1/2 to 2 acre plots and around trees). Think my sickle mower on the tractor is up to it, or do I need to find a disc mower. Know a disc mower would be quicker, but how SLOW is the sickle mower?

Dave

What knid of sickle mower do you have,..i.e. tow behind, gear driven, belt driven, or hydraulic pump driven? I used a hydraulic pump driven sickel mower with variable height adjustment while working for the Road Commission, Mowed miles of ditches and it worked great. So I guess it depends on your equipment.

Just not as shiney....
Driven by a gearbox and pitman arm.

A sickle mower is just fine for your needs. either will do the job, but for the plot size you are looking at, and the fact that you own it, I would go with the sickle. The speed of the disk mower will not be noticeable in the tight situations you describe. The disk will probably handle trash easier, but care needs to be taken with either to avoid injury, and broken equipment. Make sure the breakaway feature works on the mount. Jim

thats all ya need...there was many a acre cut with sickle mowers before the modern stuff came along...sickle's a lil slower but youre not cutting 50+ acres at a time.

In a decent sized field a sickle mower should do about 3 acres per hour. Little patches like that take more time. Either machine can do good work. Disc mower shines because of travel speed, but in little patches you"ll never get a good run at it!

In high altitude mountain meadows, sicles are still used to cut hundreds, maybe thousands of acres of mountain grass hay

Looks to me like it will do the job just fine. Nice looking tractor Dave. Plenty of h.p. to whatever job you need done. Have fun cutting yer hay.

Can't claim that one, it's just the same model as mine. Maybe one day......
