O/T Starting young..........

Are you talking about the .22LR AR that is made by Ruger and Smith and Wesson or a smaller version that is for a kid?

I bought my son a pump action airsoft gun (plastic BBs) I wanted to get him the airsoft machine gun, H-K MP5........But...it was made in China and is junk. I will likely buy one of those .22LR ARs for plinking, 5 cents per bullet is cheap compared to 50 cents per round for my Real AR that shoots the .223 caliber round.

So, what did you see at that gun show? other then a mini-AR? was it packed, no room to walk? I havent been to a gun show in almost a year. Some gun shows are great, tables and tables of guns from stores/private collections/other goodies like magazines/hunting knives/scopes/gun cases.

Did you see that new ACR rifle from Bushmaster yet? (very nice, but pricey) Armalite also has a new modular rifle that is likely over $1500. I saw it on their website.

My son bought his daughter a 22 for her first birthday. It was a real short one, all pink in color. Ol grandpa (ME) just shook his head. From my rough numbers at her first birthday party I guessed over $800.00 worth of gifts from friends and family, and I know that is not right.

My son and daughter in law are known to have good garage sales however. And Ol Grandpa has been known to enjoy their garage sales also. They tend to have alot of junk that is going to get tossed.

I certianly could live pretty well with what they waste every year.

WOW!! An assault rifle requires a Class III license, an expensive transfer stamp, a background check, etc. Maybe it was just a semi-auto rifle???

My nine yr old has a .22 cricket, rem 870 .20 gauge and a rem 700 .243 all used for target or hunting. Got him started with the .22 at age 6 taught him the correct way to handle them. He knows what is what and is only allowed to do so with me by his side. I think it depends on the child and parents but safety and responsibility are number one.

Amen to that. My boy hunts big game on his big game hunter Nintendo Wii game, he loves it. This summer I will take my son to the rifle range, close supervision by me of course. My dad didnt like guns or hunting, so I grew up with none of the that. In fact my grandfather gave me a .22LR Savage rifle from the 40s, I was 14. My dad never took me to a range to shoot it or anything. I will be taking my boy to shoot as he grows up. My son will inherit all my guns when I am gone, so I need to show him how to shoot them.

You are starting him out right. My Dad bought me a 410 at age 12 and took me hunting that fall with close supervision. That memory is priceless as I lost him at age 61 in 1978. but still have the memory of that hunt.

I still have the first firearm I ever fired, a Stevens 12 guage pump. It was my father's.

When I was about 10, I kept bugging him to let me shoot it. He finally gave in, figuring it would knock me on my butt and I'd forget about it. I shot a tin can off a post, then went out in a corral and shot a jack rabbit. Did a lot of hunting from then on. I inherited the shotgun when "Pop" died.

BTW, the "Youth Assault" was semi-auto.

I've got the second I ever fired, a 20 gauge Iver Johnson, it was old when Grandpa got it, and that was before he married grandma, it would have been 55 or 56 years ago this year. I came across a 16 and got it, too. Also have the 30-06 grandpa got dad and dad never used to kill anything. And a Glenfield model 20 like my uncle used for a barn gun.

I remember reading here sometime recently about a 22LR conversion kit for the AR rifles. Seems to me you swap the bolt and a spring then slide a tube in the chamber and it was ready to go.

I'm not sure what the spring is called, recoil maybe? I'm not real familiar with the AR's, they are a bit out of my price range. The most expensive gun I own is a Judge. And that's only because I couldn't find a used one.

Could someone put a definition to the term "assault rifle" for me?

Hey Scot if your iver johnson is incredibly old, forearm will be held on by screw instead of snap off. I had one like that when I was 12. It came from my cousins grandpa. Have never seen one like it. Salvaged it from a chicken coop, so rusty afraid to fire. Think its hangin on a wall somewhere.
