Front Wheel Assist

Two years ago I bought my first fwa. I have two now and just love them. One of the best things about them is how smooth they ride across a plowed field with those large fronts. and they carry alot better on soft ground where a small tire 2 wheel drive would cut in and start pushing dirt with the fronts. So that gets me to wondering why they don't make a 2 wheel drive with large tires on front? Same size as on fwa only without the pull. Any thoughts?

Some of the guys with single axle drive combines have put tractor tread tires on rear (steering) wheels, with treads backwards - like would be done with a ground driven tool. Claim they tend to climb upward instead of sinking in in muddy conditions. Might be worth a try for tractors without front drive.

Farmer I know has all ground in the hills East of Red Oak Iowa. He always has the RWA axle and tires on his combine, but no actual assist. Says he needs the stronger axle, not the assist!

I had one fwd tractor and two fwd trucks and I will never ever, ever have any more. If I need fwd, I shouldn't be there. Soil damage, maintenance and the tendency to get just a little too brave in wet spots.

Sounds like my theory would be just right for you. A two wheel drive with large fronts. You could get the smooth ride without going where you shouldn't. Best of both worlds.

My 2wd 4020 came with 7.60-16s. With a loader on the front and working plowed ground I put 11L16 wagon tires on 8" wide rims at first but they were too smooth for good steering when rotary hoeing so it now has 11.00-16 4 rib on those 8" rims. A lot taller than the original tires. That's about as tall as I could get on 6 bolt rims.

If cost is not a big issue which I know it usually is but you can solve some compaction issues by dually your front drivers along with the rears which helps on weight distibution. I think JMS/MN has a Deere that looks sweet with that setup.
