sometimes......

Sometimes I see things going by here headed for the crusher up the road that just make me want to cry. I was taking a bale across the road this afternoon and saw a pickup pulling a darned nice looking Deere 780 HydraPush spreader loaded with scrap. Darned nice looking outfit, beater looked good, all the tires stood up straight....I just hope he was using it for a trailer to haul junk and was taking it back home. Especially given the shape that all 3 of my spreaders are in. Darndest part is,there isn't even all that much steel in one, most of it is a composit material so it won't rust out. Major bummer.

Took a load of iron in today. There was a decent [with good tires] looking rough terrain forklift "in the pile"
Truck in front of us threw off a good looking small portable air compressor.
Trailer in line had 6 or 8 decent bicycles, and a complete lawn mower on it.
At this yard you can;t buy anything.
They say they are working on setting up a system to sell off the yard one day.

I've got a friend who runs scrap in season and out. Sometimes he makes real money, most times just pocket change for his hobbies. He knows the people at the yard really well. A lot of times, especially when he isn't getting much real money for the scrap, he looks through their pile and picks up things he needs and tosses them in his truck. Kind of an even trade.

Speaking of scrap yards, a couple of years ago, a high school classmate of mine took a set of four beat up mag wheels to a scrap yard place.

They were going to give him $46 for them. Their computerized check writing system screwed up and wrote a check for $4600. They didn't catch it at the time, so this bonehead went home, cashed the check and went out and bought a pickup.

A couple of weeks later, the yard caught it and called him wanting their money back. Of course, he no longer had it. Last I heard, he'd made a deal to pay it back a hundred a month till it was paid back.
