Going on wheat harvest

I'm going to go on this years wheat harvest. Working for a guy from Wyoming. We will be harvesting in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, and Montana. We will have two semis, two new combines, and one bobtail truck.

I had the opportunity to do this almost 20 years ago and I passed it up. I've always regretted not going. I'm at a point in my life that I can make it work out to go so I thought might as well do it. It should be alot of fun.

Good for you. Sounds like something that many people would love to do, but most will never have the chance.

Yes! As Nancy said, go, and send pics! I've always thought I'd like to do that, but came back to the dairy farm the day after I graduated from tech school. I've tried to talk a couple of my cousins into it too, but they haven't gone. Maybe Haynes will yet, once his enlistement in the Air Force is done.

A friend of mine did it last summer... worked with a big outfit that went all the way from Texas to Canada. If you can handle being bored in the down time (rain) you should be ok. He said that was by far the worst part.

I wish you well.

I've never for a moment thought of custom cutting as being fun. For starters for me the grain dust causes intense itching that only stops about two weeks after harvest ends.

The extremely long hours are something that I would not have looked forward to in my younger days and especially not now.

Frustration with long elevator lines and pressure from farmer and boss alike to get the load dropped and back for another---no fun.

I hope you are fully aware of salary terms before signing on. Sickle time pay only or ??? Who does laundry, will you have time to do your own? Meals? Sleeping arrangements?

Best wishes for a fun filled summer. At least you will get to see a lot of diverse territory first hand and up close. Be sure to take a GPS device so you can log your locations for return visits in later years to come.

I went back in 2000 between Sophomore and Junior years of college. You will get tired of cutting wheat, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. Made some great friends and met lots of good farmers, saw lots of countryside and some tornadoes, went to several county fairs, and local watering holes. Guy I worked for was out of OK, and had 5 JD combines, 6 semis, service truck, and 3 bunk houses to house the crew. I kept a daily journal so as to remember what I did, all the acres we cut and hours we worked per day, and other happenings. Great Experience!

As for the downtime(rain). Not to worry, that is when routine service gets done(oil changes and such). Also check with your boss to see if you can take off to site see when you have down time. We could take a crew cab and go, just had to buy the fuel.

Go! Had a daughter go some 30 yrs ago. Did not go all the way. Had one field she still remembers. It was in Colorado and was thirty five miles around it. She could make them big (at that time) 30ft JD really work. She was usually the pace setter. Made the men on the crew mad. Her husband to be build all of the trailers to pull JD experimental machines of that time. Had a JD service crew travel with them. will try and find some pictures to post. I cannot remember how many mile they strung out on the highway when on the move.

I plan on taking alot of them. I guess i'm going to have to learn how to use a digital camera and how to get them on here.

I wanted to do that back when I was younger. A local boy did it last year. He left last spring almost before we were doing spring fieldwork. Had some grain to haul out of bins somewhere before they started cutting in Texas. He got up into Canada late in the year and was waiting out the weather in late November. His dad said he had to go back to Texas and start right in on the milo when they got done up there. Didn't even know if he'd be home by Christmas. Don't know if he was or not.

GO!! I had the chance 35 years ago but didnt go.Now, iam full of regrets, now iam tied down not able to go. SO--GOOOOO!!!!!!!
