hello again everyone, i lost my one and only set of truck keys for a '96 chevy silverado...can i buy a blank and have it cut at the dealer going off my vin # or how does that work...don't really need the truck, but would be nice ha ha...don't tell me to rub 2 wires together:)

the dealer can cut the key, they will need your vin number, a copy of your registration and possibly the title to verify ownership.

Dealers won"t cut keys with just a vin anymore. You have to have the title (in your name) in hand also. I tried to get a key cut at the dealership I bought my truck at, and without a title they wouldn"t even consider it. Just a little FYI.

All we needed in the 80's was the original key codes for the key...on those little tags with your original keys...or the original invoice at the dealer had the same key codes marked on the form...got nothing from the VIN back then...things may have changed though, as that was over 20 yrs ago...

Call a local Locksmith, it will be cheaper than the dealer(did the key have a chip)most dealer computer systems dump the information they would need after 10 years, I was told Ford dumps after 6 years.

While you are at it, cut you a spare or two and hide it, or put it on your wife's key ring. I carry a spare in my wallet.

Maybe he was wrong. Maybe their policy has changed. But when I was a Ford tech, it was 10 years according to the shop parts man.

If your vehicle is under warrenty the dealer
can do a computer check on you in seconds, to
confirm it's you vehicle and verify codes.

Good luck, you got troubles. Simplest & best solution is find the old ones. Kid lost his for 89 Olds and it was a nightmare. He finally found them. First locksmith said you can't get codes for older than 10 years. Another locksmith wanted $300 to make some keys. Girl at dealer said sometimes you get lucky, she found the code and made 2 sets. Out of the 2 sets only 1 ignition key kind of worked. 1st locksmith said she can change the ign lock, $35 labor, lock is $15 at autozone. So shop around before you get hooked. Good luck! joe-

Farm has finally begun to dry out some (at least before this weekend) and James and I took a tractor ride around the farm. When we got back, I discovered my key ring with my keys to the shop, farm truck, tractor shed, farm gates and the house had fallen out of my pocket.

I got back on my tractor and started retracing where we had been. Since we had driven through the pastures, etc, I didn't have much hope of finding them. But the Good Lord had other plans. They fell out in a spot that had very little grass and I found them.

Now they have a clip on them and get clipped to my belt loop.

first thing I have done for 40 years is put a key or set of keys u nder the picense plate Figure guy has ambition to get key off behind plate he has ambition to get a job On new gme spare will only open door as no chip but its a start

First thing I do with a new vehicle is put a key in the engine compartment, then get a spare made to carry in your wallet. Even with the electronic coded ones you can get in to get get keys you locked in your vehile. Latest problem, new key with remotes included is $150--haven't figured that one out yet!!

Desperation when you can't remem ber: Ignition key usually gets left in the car. Be sure to lock doors. Open door, pocket the key and go. Course maybe next time you will be looking for car.

All our vehicles came with 2 remotes and 2 radio keys. Main driver gets one of each. The other remote is left in house for wife and I who is not the main driver. I put a radio key hidden in the glove box where I can access it when I forget my keys.

I have multiple plain spares made for my billfold, wife to carry and to keep around the house and whereever or whoever may need or want access such as my daughter. The one in my billfold has the plastic handle ground off. I have a habit of leaving keys in the ignition or in a coat pocket or something and leaving the coat after walking a block to parking. Works for me.
