truck scale demolition advice

I have an old truck scale platform that needs to be demolished. It is about 12" x 12" with 4 foot deep reinforced concrete footings around the outside (about 12-14" thick). I need to cut or break the footings into sections that I can lift out with a 20 ton excavator. Has anyone used one of the newer concrete cutting chainsaws with diamond tipped chains? The other alternative that I can think of is a gas powered jackhammer. I have a gas powered cutoff saw that I can cut rebar with. Anyone have any advice or ideas on cutting the footings into manageable pieces?

Dig along side of concrete wall and borrow steel wrecking ball. 10 or 20 swings on each wall and you'll tear the concrete right out with your track hoe. (If you never used a wrecking ball before, let someone that has do it for you)

Get a hydraulic concrete breaker. One on the excavator would work the best but even one on a bigger skid steer would break it up. If you have to use a skid steer, it will take a while but will bust it up. I have a 1300 lb. capacity skid steer and I've broke some pretty tough concrete with a breaker on it. You'll probably want to have a torch or cutoff wheel in a grinder to cut the rebar. I think you meant it's 12 ft. by 12 ft. and 4 ft. deep. Once some of it is broken you might be able to get under it with the excavator to dig it up and then drop it to break it up. A concrete saw might work good to put slices in the concrete that would form cracks. The only place with a wrecking ball would be a demolition contractor and you'd probably have to pay through the nose to get them out. It's not the best application for a wrecking ball anyway. Dave

You wouldn't have to pay me through the nose. I have done those before we use a 3500lb. ball and an excavator with a thumb. Just drop the ball from 25 ft. and it doesn't take long. If you do not have access to these I would rent an excavator with a hammer on it. If you rent something to break it up get some thing big and get it done instead of pecking on it for days. What ever you do take your machine and dig around and under the edge and it will shell off easier. Now if you want a challenge try a bank vault.

Not many places have wrecking balls and most would charge the same as if they would have bid the whole job including cleaning everything up. My old neighbor knocked down an old bank vault using a 3000lb. ball. It took a lot of hits but after a hole was punched went a little faster. Someone bought the door for the safe to put in their basement. I heard that they had to replace the steps to their basement because the door weighed so much and was a real pain to get down there.
