How does the 2004 6.0 Turbo Diesel stack up to the others? Was this a good year, or should someone look for the 7.3?

o to Ford Truck Enthusiast. Information overload.

I had an 01 with a 7.3 and a 6speed. I traded it in for an 04 with a 6.0 and again with a 6speed. I wish I had my 7.3 back. It pulled a lot better, and got better fuel mileage. my filters were not nearly as expensive and with the 6.0 you either get one that is good or in the shop all the time. The early 6.0 has a lot of trouble with egr valves that warranty will not cover and its a 700 dollar expense you eat. They are also notorious for having headgasket problems and intake troubles. Ive been lucky and just had the egr problem with mine.If I had it to do all over Id kept my 7.3. Just my experiences with a 6.0

The Ford mechanic that does what little work on mine that I don't do myself told me to stay away from the 6.0. Told me if I ever replace my old 6.9,get a 7.3.

I think as the 6.0 went along they got better. I have an 2005 and it has been pretty much bullet proof. Although I have heard enough horror stories that as I type I am knocking on wood...

Late 2003 and early 2004 were the "bad ones". It could very easily have the newer 6.0 from the factory (if late production) or had the original 6.0 swapped out.

There were many running changes to the engine and in the 2006 year model the 6.0 supposedly had the lowest rate of warranty claims across the board for Ford Motor Company when compared to all of Ford's gas and diesel engines.

If you are going to work it, plan on high maintenance cost no matter which one you buy.

Pretty much a bad call. We have 2 at work, a'03 and a'06. The '03 has 74,000 and the '06 under 10,000 miles. We just picked up the '03 from Ford after a $4000 lifter repair, one broken lifter and two bent pushrods. This truck has had 3 turbos,a high pressure oil sensor, and a bunch of reprogramming. The '06 has had EGR work ,a new turbo, and the check engine light is on now. So much for the later years being better. There are guys I know that haven't had any problems with them so who knows? Jf

The owner of the dealership I now work for is an avid Ford man. He will not buy a 6.0 unless the Ford extended warentee goes with it.

Don"t go by all the negative you"re going to find, I have an 04 with a late 03 built engine that just hit 90,000 trouble free miles.
most of what you will find on FTE is going to be people looking for answers to problems.

Just sold 2005 at a big loss. ONly had 20K miles, so can't really tell you nothing except was so nervous couldn't sleep at night. Every trip was a disaster. Electrical problems, stalling and popping. Once took 6 hours to go 15 miles. Cops wanted to tow it. Would only run 5 mph. Real shame for me. Dealer wanted to replace injectors for 2800 bucks..Don't know if that would be under warranty or not. Left before he picked up the wrench...Be careful and good luck.

I have a 04 f350 6.0 currently has 264000 and still going. Same turbo, egr is always clean starts hard when cold but always starts oil change every 6000 miles.
