Something like a potato digger?

Does someone make a machine, like a potato digger, that will dig up a gravel drive, seperate the dirt from the gravel and put the white rock on top of the dirt? As a landlord, I have many gravel drives that I need to do something with. Just adding new white rock is not an option. I purchased a place once that the drive was a foot higher than the garage floor because the previous owners just added new gravel without removing the old. Guess what happened after each time it rained?

Most everything that digs up and separates material is set up to load the big chunks off to the side in a truck or wagon.

You might look at a beach grooming machine. If you find one that lets you put the big chunks back down instead of off into a truck or a holding bucket you might be able to use it.

Hi George: as another owner of various properties, you may be limited trying to get the job done right on the driveway itself. Gravel pits have lots of room to use large sorting machines to get different size rock ready for sale. Sounds like wet ground is also a problem. Without having a good dranage system under the driveway, you'll be back into trouble often. I don't have a good solution but I wanted to mention wet ground will sink what ever you do sooner or later so evaluate that also. Good luck. ag

Could you pull them off or out with a york rake, pull out the excess dirt, then push them back over the top?

My drives have excellent drainage. My problem is the white rock fill up with sand and gravel from years of usage. The sand and and gravel comes from the county putting it on the roads in the winter. I just took out 1/2 inch of sand from my garage. BTY my drive is concrete. My rock drives have the same problem, they fill up with sand and mud from our winters. Adding more rock is not the solution. I need a way to seperate the sand from the rocks.

hi george. dont know if it will suit your situation but i built a drag unit out of a 12 inch pipe. 6 ft long, cut in half, welded on to bars so cuts drag drive. works pretty good in spring when dries up some. scrapes high spots drops excess where low and seems to bring gravel to top. pull behind tractor or quad. limited to only going forward like a drag harrow though been thinking of putting hooks on so can pick up with bucket of loader and push too that way. if you think it will work for you e-mail and ill give detailed instructions.

George: Hi again: Sorry I didn't understood the details. A couple pictures might help generate a few more ideas? Good luck.. ag

Once it dries out enough that it's not real soft, level it off and pack it really good. If it's good road crush gravel, it will pack. That's what they do under paved roads. If it's just plain rock with no sand, it won't pack. If you rent a packer, get the big Bomag unit that weighs about 1000lbs. with the forward reverse lever or a ride on vibratory packer. The only other thing to do is remove everything, put some larger gravel down first, pack it and then add the road crush and pack it. Dave

Yes, there was a machine that did just that, it was built many years ago, back when most all roads were gravel. I think it was called a Huber Road Maintainer. Here is something like it, which brings gravel and stone to the surface. http://www.roadbadger.com/gravel_roads.htm

Dont see them used much as many roads are just graded and left or put new stone on or paved over.
