Planting Jiggs bermuda

Has anyone had any experience planting Jiggs bermuda? I planted about 14 acres last year with tops. I used an old 2 row sprigger to plant with and got a decent stand but it was a butt whoopin. The tops were constantly stopping up the sprigger. Has anybody had good luck spreading tops with a manure spreader and disking them in? If so is there a trick to setting up the spreader, like feeder chain fast/slow etc? I could plant sprigs but everything that I have heard is that Jiggs does better planted as tops. I would appreciate any info you can give me. (this is in North Central Texas/ blackland) Thanks

i'm about 40 miles south of LaGrange in the so called post oak prarie
had good luck just spreadin hybrid bermuda runners by hand and lightly discing them in...its pretty labor intensive but i can plant about 3 acres a day by myself and i'm old fat n slow...couple kids in wagon behind a tractor tossin spriggs should be able to cover some ground in 8 hours.
i actually prefer to plant spriggs or runners in late fall to take advantage of winter moisture...they grow roots all winter and come spring they jump out of ground.

well i did tifton 85 sprigs 3 years ago, pulling 16 ft trailer with tractor and pulling manure spreeder behind trailer.just bottom slingers,a person pitch forking sprigs in to spreeder. and a tractor with disc following to disc in a few inches.now the tops need joints were rhizomes can start, thats what makes the roots,if it was me leafs wont work you need stems or rhizome (roots) to get a good start.s anway yes it will work with manure spreeder. piney woods near tyler, clay and sandy soil.

I had always heard that planting sprigs/roots was the best way but the guy I bought the sprigs and tops from swore Jigg would start better from tops. I was really impressed with how much better the tops did than the sprigs. It turned off dry and didnt come a decent rain for six weeks after I put em in but they did pretty good. I have about 50 acres to do and thats a lot to throw by hand. I like the idea of pulling the manure spreader behind a trailer. Think I'll try that. Thanks

something i forgot...if you got a mother patch to get your spriggs from...get the thick ones from last years growth...you'll have more survive if rain aint up to par.
