O/T Discount Cards

How many here have a discount card from a grocer, pharmacy, gas station, etc? Do you like them?
My thing is if they can discount "cause you have a card, they can discount if you don"t. "Course I"m old fashioned.

I have them for groceries etc. I leave the name blank (so they can't butcher my last name, which isn't hard). If they insist, I put something smart like "Whydo youcare", Saveyour breath or something else smart. I have yet to be called any of those things. I have come up with a few other names, but have resisted putting them down.

I agree with you. I hate them, but if you don't use them, you are paying too much.
Example is my grocery store. I bet a fourth of what I buy has two prices.
My other dislike is like a department store here that has "40 to 60 percent off on every Friday and Satrday". How about the poor dumb guy that shops on the other days?

My wife and I use one of those discount cards at the grocery. BUT if you don't have the card with you, you can punch in the phone number the card's registered to. To preserve OUR privacy, my wife and I use my deceased mother-in-law's number, since she also had this grocery's discount card when she passed away almost 3 years ago.

I beleive at least part of the reason for the cards and belonging to the "savings club" is to make it easier for them to track their shopping demographic and trends. They can see who is buying what and where they are from.

I have a card for Roundy's and they have a rewards program for gasoline/fuel. For every $50 you spend you get 20 cents off a gallon of gas/fuel at select BP stations up to 20 gallons of fuel. Last time I gassed up I paid 83 cents per gallon. They still have in-store discounts and specials with the card but not as many or as much.

Like other have said if you don't use the card you pay full price but most stores have a store card you could probably get away with using at least a few times before they would say you needed your own. The cards are annoying at times but it helps them make money and after all that's what they're in business for.

Good shopping,
Bill

Those days are probably slow days for them so they're trying to get some more traffic thru the store in order to justify keeping the lights on?

"...I bet a fourth of what I buy has two prices." They lured you in the store with that fourth and made up for it onm the rest. The high profit items are those tempting little goodies you stand and stare at while waiting at the register.

The pharmacy discount cards are for the most part a game. Everybody and their brother will give you one free. The card people get some rebate. I have seen the cards price the rx higher than if you just walked in without one. Then, you can't use it if you have insurance, which most people do. They promise 40-60% savings. No one in pharmacy make anywhere near that kinds of margins today.

You are trading information about yourself in exchange for a cheaper prices on goods. If that bothers you, fill out your application with bogus information.

My local hardware where I have been a customer for over 35 years just started a program. I look at it as building and rewarding repeat business and competing intelligently with the big box stores. I am old fashioned too, I support the locally owned businesses

ACE Hardware has thier ACE Rewards card and our local cashiers will badger you to no end just to get your name and adress so they can sell it to another firm that will fill your mailbox with junk mail. NO THANKS!! I tell them I have cash and want to make a purchase, if they don't want my business, I will gladly go elsewhere.
The Brass Armadillo antique malls set a person just inside the front door trying to get your info so they can have a "drawing" and give out "door prizes". Every other hour or so they pick a name at random for a door prize. I refuse to go back because of how hateful and persistant one woman was with me and pretty much told me I was an idiot for not signing up to win stuff. If there were no strings attached, they could easily hand me a card with a number on it when I enter, and then just call out a number for the prize. I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday and I haven't spent a dime in thier stores since.

Geez, you guys are just not with the consumer-oriented economy; we don"t make much any more so we have to sell stuff to each other, and one of the things everyone sells is lists of prospects.
The cards (or your checks/credit/debit cards etc) let the info miners know everything you"ve bought, so they can sell that info to other companies that sell similar items.
I"d pay cash for the liquor, cigarettes, etc, though, before your health/accident ins co"s raise your rates as a higher risk...welcome to 1984!

I hear ya about the cash for liquor, etc. One of our local chains (MGM Liquor) wants to swipe your ID with every sale. Says it's to verify age. I don't go there anymore...

Also, my first wife would routinely buy stuff at the grocery store because it "gave her a lot of points." Didn't matter to her that we didn't eat it.

The only one we really use is the SpeedWay speedy rewards card. Not great but you can redeam pretty quickly and sometimes you get 3 cents/gallon off. But if the price is cheaper somewhere else, I go somewhere else.

I hadn't thought about that- all these years, I've been paying cash for my whiskey so the little woman wouldn't find checks or credit card entries to the liquor store when she does the books. LOL
