OT: Wood pellet prices

Whats the cost of wood pellets in your area? The house I bought came with a pellet stove, and while I'm not completely impressed with it, the heat is cheaper than the fuel oil furnace in the basement.

Saw an ad in the paper for pellets at $179/ton. Called them up and they said, "no, it's $169/ton." That's by far the best price I've seen. Locally the lowest I've seen was only around $225/ton, otherwise it was closer to $250/ton.

Needless to say, instead of working on the farm today on my day off, I scrambled to get a trailer to pull behind my brother's truck and picked up 4 tons for next year. Should hopefully be enough to get me through next season, paid in full now. Should help lower fuel oil consumption by quite a bit, as this winter it was atleast 150 gal/month, if not 175 or 200 when it got really cold out, at around $2.50-$2.60/gal.

Doing the math, a bag lasts almost a day, and with 50 bags per ton, that's 200 bags. Burning some now to help out in the warmer weather instead of running the furnace, but should work out pretty well.

Place I got them from was in Plymouth, Wisconsin, about 1/4 mile south of Fleet Farm on 57.

What are you guys paying?

Look at the bags to make sure there isn't moisture in them from being stored outside. There is a noticeable difference between brands also.
Some stoves will burn corn or pellets. Check out I Burn Corn.com for a lot of information on burning corn or pellets. Some pellet stoves you can burn a blend of corn and pellets which is cheaper then pellets.

We installed a pellet stove 3 years ago, it's a freestanding "Yankee" stove made by Travis Ind.

A lot of people and our stove dealer advised us to burn a few bags of different pellet brands before we bought by the ton.

Our stove heats our 2 story 1,800 sq ft home very well, she likes to keep the house around 74deg. Lately we have been going through a bag a day, we have never used more than a bag and a half a day.

We have found that we get the best heat from pellets made by "Energex (bald eagle on bag) made in PA", or "Hammer's Hot Ones made in WV".

Both brands are hardwood pellets and each are selling for $229.oo for a skid of 50 fourty lb bags at our stove dealer (in MD).

I paid $220 per ton last summer. Check around for pellets, prices vary.

Tractor supply sells pellets, some hardware stores too.

Last year i was paying 157.00 per ton.
This year price went up to 197.00 per ton.

This weeek i went in a local Bucheitt store and bought 84 bags for 2.50 per bag it took some talking but i came home with them.

I used almost 3 ton this year furnace never came on all winter . Has been cold in Ill. though.

Have no idea what they sell for , I know local bank made a big over a million dollar loan last year to the local hardwood mill here. The mill put in a new building to produce pellets. Thing cranks out about 270 tons in 24 hrs. At the grand opening they took us on a tour and their statement was we (Tennessee) will see the price drop because cost of transportation figures in the retail price of pellets. They were projecting strong sales directly north, Il, Ind Ohio & Wis. Last time I talked to the mgr he said so far they were selling about all they could make..No glue just a hard wood pressed thing

I pay 250.00 a ton here in Ny,30.00 delivered and stacked, they will store them for 10.00 a ton in there warehouse. You can get premium pellets for 300.00 a ton, they are real nice too,I just cant afford though.I heat whole house 1800sqft,with pellet stove, use 3-3-1/2 ton per season. The only advantage Ive seen burning the premium pellets is I have to clean my stove less.Im sure if I broke it down to cost per BTU I might see better results, but I only have so much money in my pocket when I go buy them.

I payed $200 a ton last year on sale for Golden Blaze (top of the line) but I only live about 50 miles from the factory. with my stove having a programmable thermostat we just sit back and watch the flames when its on.

I looked at the bags today and they're Premium Vulcan Wood Pellets. Made in Vulcan, MI.

I haven't really used the stove much this past winter due to not having much money to put down on a bunch of pellets, and the lack of knowledge on them. Finally cracked open the book yesterday that the home owner left behind, looked up the mfg's website, looked at some other stuff I found online, etc....

After giving it a good cleaning this morning, it's working much better thanit was before and now I'm wishing I would have read the book sooner(go figure, right?) Nobody to blame but myself on that one.

We'll see how good it works next winter I guess. It'll be running until probably next month too, but it's a little too warm to get a good feel for the sub zero temperatures.

Ours were about $220/ton last fall and are down to $200 or less
now. Been using Pro-Pellet which are made locally.

Natural gas has been really low this winter so we've burning more
gas than pellets since the gas is cheaper/BTU. Oil and electric are
another story. Only been thru about 64 bags (less than 1.5 tons)
this winter.
