How to move a grren house

Well as some of you know I have a green house but it is at my moms place. Well I need to move it. Measured it yesterday and it is 10 foot long and 8 foot wide and has 3-4X4 runners under it. My trailer I use to haul tractors is not wide enough for it but I could use some pipes that would be say 9 foot to use as rollers and load it that way but not sure if the green house would take the twisting that might cause.
2nd option would be to take part of a mobile home frame I have and take it up there and drop the axle from under it and then slide it under the green house.
So what ideas would you have as to how to do this??
Thanks

Can you skid it on the 4x4s? Depends on how far, but I would think it could go 1/4 mile that way. Greg

If it's got skids already just lay 2 or 3 poles crossways on your trailer and slide it on. Drive real easy going home and you should be OK..

Take the trailer with you though..........

i'm not sure how far you have to haul it,but if its pretty close, why not slide it on your low boy sideways...hang some flags on it and go.
that is if the 3 runners are on the 10' part.

Old, I have ripped old telephone poles with my chainsaw and used each half as runners under a chicken house..I Spiked angle braces across, to keep the runners from wracking when turning and the building is still setting on them as I speak..all happy in it's new location on another farm..!!

A green house would probably not be too heavy..unless it has all glass windows..

With the above runners, you could use your rollers and winch it on your trailer..would give it some strength and stability...

Rich,
Two questions. 1. What's the distance you will be hauling the green house? 2. What's the status of the structure? Will it handle the trip?

Have done a few things simular years ago on back roads. If the building is somewhat structurally sound, place the poles on your trailer and load it up. If it's questionable, then pull the axles out of the trailer frame, slide it under, jack it up and put the axles under it and tow it that way. Depending on condition of the building and distance...this would have a lot to do with how to haul it. Also, may want to check to see if any permits are needed.

I know where there's an old smokehouse that I may be moving if it's capable the same way. Building is about 10 x 14. It's built so after roof is removed, each side can be layed down and hauled to another location.

Just .03 cents worth of my personal opinion. And probably worth less than that.

later days mate,
Jim

I have moved small buildings using a bale mover. Put the building on skids and jack up the front and backup the tractor and walk the baler mover underneath of it and away you go. When you go to where you are going, reverse the process. Works really slick.

Are you thinking of sliding the mobile home frame under the greenhouse frame or just the axle? If the runners are good you could set the greenhouse on the bare mobile home axle, chain or fasten the axle in place so it won't move much. Tie a tongue of some sort to the front of the building, or tie the front of the building to the three point hitch of the little Ford. You're inventive enough to get it done and you don't have to win any races getting it down that steep hill to your place. Jim

Mobile home axles are not wide enough to do that plus I think there might be to much building twist and that in turn might brake the fiber glass green house panels it is made of. The north wall is the only solid wall in it the rest is the fiber glass stuff and it is old so it is probably brittle

North wall and about 2 foot of the east and west side are made from plywood but the rest is fiber glass green house panels on 2X4s and the roof is also fiber glass panels so I figure I will need to be careful not to twist it to much or I'll have a frame but not green. LOL As for how far about a mile all driveway but have one long hill to go down. Not sure how good or bad the 4X4 runners maybe since my dad built this thing 15 plus years ago and in 2003 when the tornado went through the area it pushed the green house off a few of the blocks

Fiber glass green house panels that are 15 plus years out so they are on the brittle side so I know I will need to use a lot of TLC doing this job

I agree, lift up each corner and place a barrel under it. Then back your trailer under it sideways. If only going a mile, it should be ok. You'll be overwidth but what the heck. You'll just haul it sideways rather than lengthwise.

Rich,
That short a distance...may want to use the mobile home frame. OR if you've got a running gear for a hay wagon, jack the building, pull the pin on the main frame of the trailer, and slide the two under it from opposite sides and pin it back up. The runners should sit on the cross beams where the box for the wagon would sit and strap it down. Just hitch up and take it easy. As far as the "downhill" just go slow and in low gear. The low gear and slow going should minimize the twist on the structure. May also want to take duct tape and "re-enforce" the frames and glaze panels.

Good Luck with the transport. Sounds like a fun project.

Well lets just say this. She is more then 30 years older then I am. Oh and I'm not all that old the handle comes from a few places on is where I learned what I know. I kept my ears open and my eyes open and mouth shut around older people and learned a lot that way

At times I wish I had a hay wagon but I don't. I'll probably do the mobile home frame and then may leave it under it when I set it down

Why move it? You should visit your MomS every two or three days anyway.Heck, get her involved in the gardening.

Somewhere on the web is a video of moving a small garage with a small loader tractor. It has been posted here before. They basically framed up enough structure to keep the building together, drove into the building, lifted one end with the 3-point and the other with the loader, and drove to the new location.

Might not be applicable to this situation, but something else to think about.

Good Luck,

Kirk

I"ve done that several times- to the same building. Garage got moved when we built the house 13 years ago, then moved it around the yard, then son took it to his place a half mile down the road. Each time, used a 3020 with loader n the front and bale fork on the rear- single car garage. Nice pix of it going down the road, but I couldn"t see to the front, just watched out the side window for the road edge....got pretty smoky inside with the diesel!

Because she wants it gone for one reason. Plus this time of yer it has to be heated at night so that would add to her electric bill etc. Me or my wife see her just about every day and I call her almost every night

might just hire a rollback. even if its $200 it saves you a lot of screwing around and probably more likely to keep it in one piece.

Can you just take the the fiberglass panels off, move it without worrying about the flex, then replace them when you get it set and tightened back up? Save you a lot of stress and worrying.......
