speaken of racoons i had one cost me$ 287.00 dollars

leaven for work at 4:30am I noticed a large coon perched on my power pole, well as i got in my vehicle to leave I must have scared him on up the pole into the wires and transformer causing instant black out. I went on in to work and called the power company explaining what had happened and asked if my transformer would reset itself the tech said no that they wood have to come out and reset it an from there on I felt i was the recipient of good customer service. About 2weeks later I received a service charge in the mail for $287.00 stating the problem was on the consumer side which was correct it was the circuit breaker just below the meter. And to make a bad thing worse the coon didn't die and has been back since P.S I an currently disputing the bill

A thing something like that didn't cost me any money just time. I was leaving Dad's drive way, this big gopher snake was crossing the drive. I had no desire to run over him so I stopped. The snake decided he would hide in my 65 VW transaxel. Now I really had a problem. If I just drove away the snake could get cooked by the mufflers, or get caught in the fan belt, or enter the blower, and get chopped into pieces. I finally teased the snake with a branch, and the snake decided to leave. The elect company may be correct if the problem was below the meter. It may be worth a try to fight it. Stan

Unless things are different in your area than anywhere else I have heard of, anything on power company side of meter is theirs. On your side of meter is yours.

I believe they are correct, anything up to the meter is the power company problem anything downstream of the meter is on your dime.

$287 inn't too bad for coon damage, consider the many cases of a coon sleeping in the radiator fan shroud of a big combine harvester. Start the engine with him in there usuall cost atleast $2000 in parts and a day of lost precious harvest time.

Over the weekend, 2 men trimming a tree let a ladder touch a 7,200V line. It took over 20 minutes to get the line de-energized.. From reports, a very graphic accident scene..

The power co. had a spot in the paper, saying that they will offer help or cut the offending limbs, which is BS.. A neighbor had a tree that actually had a line grown into a limb. He called, they came out, but refused to offer any help, said it was his responsibility.. He cut the tree... Line broke, and they billed him for over 400 dollars..

Our REA power coop is pretty good,t hey will take care of trees on either side of the transformer. They feel it will cause issues, and safer for their own people to deal with it than to let haphazard things go wrong. They will try to get rid of real problems tho, not come back & trim the same tree every year - the tree might need to go. That sorta thing, which only makes sense.

We had a tree split in 1/2 and come down,it stretched our wires down tot he ground - about 2 feet off. Power never went off. We called the coop, they came out & about fell over - couldn't believe the wires didn't bust, couldn't believe the transformer didn't pop, or that a pole didn't snap. They looked everything over, and just couldn't believe it. They had dad cut the tree because they didn't have a big enough chain saw (they were just amazed) but took care of retightening the wires, getting everything back in shape.

I'm thankful my electrical co-op isn't like that. A few years ago, we had the main overload "breaker" trip up on the pole by the transformer. It happened twice, both times on a Sunday. I called and someone was there in about an hour with a tool to re-insert it from the ground. After the second time, they replaced the transformer. I was never billed a penny.

Another time I noticed a walnut in my pasture that was growing into the power lines. I called the co-op and told them where it was and that I was worried about it. I asked how much of it I would be responsible for and they laughed at me and said no, they don't charge for that. They even made a brush pile.

I feel sorry for people dealing with big power companies and phone companies for their service. Co-ops are pretty nice.
