Vermeer 505 Super I vs JD 530

Wanting to purchase my first round baler. Looked at a next to new (less than 1500 bales) early year Vermeer 505 SI (with narrow untwisted belts and NO hydraulic tensioner). It also has gathering wheels. Basically has sat unused since new. Asking price is 8000 CDN firm. Also saw a JD 530 that is in good shape and sat for past 6 years shedded and unused. Asking price is 6500 CDN OBO. Need some insight and advice on these two machines.

I'm sure you're aware, but the biggest difference is that the 505 makes 5ft bales and the 530 makes 6ft bales.

I would recommend going with the 530. In my opinion, the Vermeer baler that is on par with a JD 530 or 535 is the 605K. I wouldn't put the I or J series in the same category. Then again I haven't owned any of these balers, so I may be wrong. That's just what I've gathered. My next baler will probably be a JD 535 or a Vermeer 605K.

Go with the John Deere. The Vermeer baler is a good baler but around here I dont have the dealer support. I have a JD 567 which is alot newer but I love it.

Hey Stuart,
I am wondering what horse power of a tractor you use to run the 567? I just picked up a nice used 567 and am hoping our 85 hp tractor will be enough for it. Thanks and have a good one.

85HP will pull it but more HP will handle larger windrows better. I pull a JD 467 either 5 or 6 mph depending on conditions with a 120 hp and can sometimes hear governor kick in.

6500 is high for a rd baler built in the mid 80's. I've seen 535's for that amount and then one can have twin twine arms, push bar & Netwrap. There's a 435 for sale on TX Craigslist for $5500 .Look inside baler for possible holes worn in side of walls.

I have a 505 I Vermeer. It has the single twine arm and I would rather have 2 arms for increased speed. It is easy to pull with a 65 hp tractor.
The Super I should make a little tighter bales and has bigger bearings on the main drive shaft and steel reinforcing blocks around the bearings. It makes 5 x 5 bales the JD makes 5 x 6. Sounds like the Vermeer is in exceptionally good shape. Prices for both of them sound like they are at the top of the scale.
Another issue is dealer support as in which one has the best and closest dealer.

Thanks for the input. I figured these prices are at the top of the scale, especially the Vermeer. What"s the difference between the JD 530 and 535. What would be a fair price for one in good shape. My only reference point it "tractor house", and they seem to be about 5000 for a junker and up to 12 000 for one in good shape.

I have heard that the JD"s are fairly easy to repair if necessary. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, but have never touched a baler.

A 535 is the next model after the 530. 535's can have twin twine arms(cuts wrapping time down a lot),push bar(no need to back up to eject bale) & Netwrap. It also has improved tension springs over the 530. Other than that basically the same baler.

Have you looked @ Machinefinder.com,Fastline or Iron solutions? Also how about Farmer Buy/Sale? As I stated in TX one can buy a 35 series for $6500 or less.
