Phonics is fine as far as it goes. But the American language is far to complicated for that. You need to learn all the nuances of words that sound the same and are spelled differently for various meanings, and all the words that don't sound anything like they are spelled. It takes repetition in reading to memorize. I can tell real quick reading these forums which guys read and which guys watch TV. But I am polite enough not to put anybody down. I believe it is linked to personality traits that some people grasp the written word and command of the language more readily than others. OH, and yeah, spell check helps too. :)

Hooked on phonics, huh? I have gone through 12 years of school, 3 years tech school college. Won 4 spelling bees, but how in the world this phonics program works, I will never know. I bought this program for grandson and have no idea what is going on in phonics. Could not get through the first simple lesson. I do have hearing problems, but never thought it was that bad. Guess it was miracle that I learned anything. Glad now to be retired(electrician)and not starting over. Wrote letters for captains and commanders in the U.S. Navy. They never complained. Whew!
