OK why do some diesel powered trucks stink so much more than others. Seems like the newer ones are not so bad, but get behind some (not all) older trucks and it is so bad you want to pull off and let them get a couple miles down the road before you follow them. Is it folks running off-road fuel? I know it's not veggie oil, that has its own smell.
 
Older trucks have no emmissions. Newer trucks have really strict emission standards. My 09 Dodge doesnt stink at all until it starts a REGEN. Then it dumps raw fuel into the exhaust to burn off particulate in the filters.
 

Some diesel pu's are over-fueled with a super chip!!!!!!!!! Didn't you know a lot of black smoke impresses some people. Also those annoying sounding PU's with NO MUFFLER.
 
hey Jim and Chev, the one that made me think to ask this had hardly any black smoke. I have seen them with the pump cranked way up smoking like coal but even some of those don't have that nasty smell.
 
Most of the country off road and on road fuel is the same cept for the color. here in wisconsin it is. jim
 
No emissions controls and sometimes bad engine design. The worst I have ever seen is A Case 188D diesel engine in an old Case 1740 skid loader. This thing has the most nasty exhaust I have ever experienced. runs great, just that awful exhaust stench.
Off road and highway diesel is the same except for the dye to color off road diesel to identify it for tax purposes.
 
I've been told it is a cheaper or "dirtier" fuel. I worked on a fleet of trucks doing some sub-contract work, and ALL of them would burn your eyes in the parking lot running, or following them down the road. The fleet owner gave us some diesel for our heaters, and we had to dump it out of them, it was so strong, it burned your eyes, and mouth/throat from the fumes. We would get a 55 gal drum from the local service station/conv. store, and all was OK. We'd get it from the co-op, and it was good...
