Maple syrup

We set our 15 taps yesterday morning. Not running really fast yet, but the early run is the best quality, I'm told. Last year from 16 taps we got about 25 quarts. Anybody else tapped yet?

I'm in western NY and have one test tap out now. Sap started to flow 2 days ago, but not very much. Deep snow cover here is also getting in the way.

We've only got 1 to 2 feet on the ground now, but the first year we did it we had 3-4 feet and that was tough to get through.

Yes. Ran last week for a few days. We just had a big snow (central NY), and I suspect that if the sun comes out it a few days, it will run like crazy. But, the sap is also going to have a high water content. Lots of extra boiling unless you've got an reverse-osmosis machine (I don't).

Snowshoes were a big part of my operation when I ran sap back in high school - no pipelines. Worked up from boiling in a couple of turkey pans to a 3x5 foot stainless pan (still not a "real" syrup pan); I think my best year was 17 gallons. At least a couple years from getting set up to do it here. My brother still has the old setup, and started to play with pipelines for it, but not too diligently.

Here in SouthWest Michigan and just noticed that my neighbor started tapping trees around the area, probably started this past weekend. Still have quite a bit of snow but it's starting to warm up a bit during the day so might be getting some run on it.
