When standing on the rt. side of my 850 Ford looking at the distributor which cyl. is 1,2,3 & 4. Which is 1,2,3 & 4 on the dist. Thanks

Radaitor end of engine is #1 then working back it is 2,3,4. #4 is the closes one to the seat. As for where each wire may or may not be on the distributor cap well that depends on if the distributor has ever been pulled so you have 4 chances of getting it right. Pull the #1 plug out and get the engine at TDC on #1 and pull the distributor cap off. Look at which nipple the rotor points to and you will have it correct or you will be 180 out depending on if it is on compression or exhaust stroke. If you have help you can hold your thumb or finger in the plug hole and feel compression an that will help you a lot

To add to what old said, you also need to know the firing order and whether the distributor turns cw or ccw in order to put the plug wires in the correct sequence on the distributor.
