OT: Vinyl self stick tile too old?

About 5 years ago I bought some Armstrong 12" square self adhesive tile (also says Urethane on the package)but due to priorities shifting, I never got them laid. Had a professional floor man come and put down new softwood underlayment and when he peeled the first tile to stick it down, it didn't stick very well and he asked "how old" is this stuff?

Wife was very careful to pick out just the right pattern and now looking again for non self stick tile, they are all ugly. I agree, all commercial blah looking stuff.

Question: can vinyl self ad. tile have a use by date? Nothing on the box.

Big box store guy said just use my bond enhancer and make sure the tile is warm,,it will work.Don't have much trust, but bought a bottle of liquid to coat the floor with first.

I am willing to take the risk but wondered what anyone else's experience is.

BTW, tile was at room temp, was always stored in a heated/air conditioned place. Leo

Warm a couple and stick them (or pieces of them) to a scrap of the underlayment. If they seem pretty sticky, I would rent a floor roller to get them to bond warm. Jim

Thanks all. Big box store guy said regular tile glue will cause the S.A glue to turn color and bleed around tile crevices. This in a bathroom with fairly low traffic. I appreciate the help. Leo

I have installed a good bit of this type of tile and have never had it do what the Big Box store guy said. I have a friend that has installed tile for at least 30 years and that is where I learned the trick of using VCT mastic on self stick tile. Most of those Bib Box store guys have never even opened the box let alone installed the tile. They are in the business to sell you more tile.

I had some old stuff on the kitchen floor it was awful looking stuff coming up all over the place. I used Ma's iron to heat it and then remove it. Darn stuff would stick to anything it touched after i heated it.
