OT belted galloways

I have a neighbor down the road( less than a mile) that has about 25/30 head of belties that have nothing to eat. My question to you is, have you ever seen any cattle that would stand around and eat cow patties day after day and if so how do they survive. What will the repercussions be for these cattle in the long run. Sorry for the long post but many people close are very upset to say the least!
Thanks in advance

I don't know if they will survive. Time to call local animal protection agency, have owners charged with cruelty. Hopefully someone will get them and look after them properly.

In your place, I would go talk to the person and maybe offer to buy them (if I had the place, feed, and funds) or see if I could help. May get a real good deal and/or make a lifelong friend. You goota know what to do yourself though. I'm not real big on reporting stuff unless I know the real deal.

I don't need or want them, I know the whole deal he's lazy
This is in coshocton county ohio, maybe someone else will chime in that knows the situation!

Dad said that back years ago the place right next door had an owner for a few years who didn't feed or care for his cows. These were milk cows in a stanchion barn. He said they stood there in so much manure that they were almost standing on their heads. He said Grandpa took his own hay up there and fed them a few times because he felt so sorry for the cows.
A local cattle hauler came across a similar situation. He ended up calling the local county animal control. I don't think the guy ever actually had any charges brought against him. He just agreed to let the cows be sold.
A friend said he came across the same thing not long ago. He went to look at a bull and found a barn full of dead cows. He said the only one alive had broken her stanchion and was running loose.
Before I did anything,I think I'd make D@MNED sure they weren't being fed somewhere that you're not seeing it and just licking at the ground for a simple lack of minerals or something. My sister made the mistake of sticking her nose in a situation when she was in high school trying to be a do gooder. She had seen a dog tied up and was told by one of her friends that the folks had moved away. They were just on vacation and somebody else was taking care of them.
If you DO call anybody, call the county animal control, not some extremist organization. Animal control will most likely get them fed where they are,not go in like storm troopers trying to take them away right off the bat.

usetob,

Are the cows skinny? Belted Galloways are beef cattle. They shouldn't look like Holsteins. If their hip bones are protuding, you can see their backbone and ribs, and they don't have a brisket, they're underfed.

We have a case going on right now in Middle Tennessee of some guy who allowed 60 cows to starve to death plus some large number to be seriously malnourished. The animal control people have taken control of the animals and are working out the mess right now.

Last summer a local guy starved a small herd of horses to death. The ones still living were euthanized by animal control.

If I thought those cows were malnourished, I'd be on the phone.

Good luck with your decision.

Maybe instead of wasting time typing up a post like this, you should be on the phone to the local animal control.

I have no respect for any SOB thats to lazy or cant afford feed and so he just lets the animals starve. I also have very little respect for anyone who sees this type of abuse happening and wont make any phone calls becasue they dont want to get involved or have a bad relationship with a neighbor.

You think those animals that have to eat there own cow piles dont deserve anything better?

Sorry for the rant but this really strikes a nerve with me.

Similar cases here recently- if animal control is not available, start with a call to the county sheriff. Usually a financial/mental issue with the owner. Sheriff can check out situation without mentioning you.

I cant believe that with all the cases you see on TV and in the newspapers, you had to get on here and ask what to do. Get on the phone and call animal control. Tom

Call the Coshocton County Sheriff. Your name will be kept confidential and the animals will get the proper attention they need. Even if they are being fed somewhee you can't see, he'll check it out. Don't ask me how I know. Good luck Keith

Local Sheriff department is your best bet, and make it clear to the officer that you'll be watching to see to it they either have hay or are removed from the pasture.
Other thing I'd do, since I have hay, is offer the sheriff's office to feed them enough hay for a few days until things get straightened out.
I'm really bothered when people starve animals in confined areas like that.

Its just sickening, but here in NY we have
Ag and markets that handle things like that. Around the corner from my father in law a guy was doing the same thing, not feeding his cows. Idiot bales hay all summer, then dosent feed them come winter, no water once the pond freezes. My FIL stopped and threw them hay several times. I called the state troopers one time, because a cow had died and was there in the morning when I went to my fil, and still laying there8 hours later. Make some calls.

First of all thank you for responding even though some cut like a sword. I have been on and farmed all my life untill I retired and never have I seen anything like this before. As for as calling the authorities it has been done many times. I know it's hard to understand ( for me too) the only thing they will do is write a ticket ($40.00+ court cost) and it's over...
all the best
Ron

The Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals or the local sheriff,
Tom TX makes a good point,
People with animals have a responsibility for their welfare, if they can't look after them properly then they should be on the "Can't Have/Own" Register. [Don't ask.]
