Fair Animals

In an earlier post, we discussed dairies.
At one time, our county had more hogs than any county in OH. Nearly everyone had some. Now 'bout only pigs you see are at the county fair. Same can be said for cattle. Even closed down the sale barn.
Bet I see more goats, chickens and rabbits than pigs & cows at the county fair. Times are a changin.

I helped build two hog/farrow barns on the Scholl farm near Columbus after high school. All the hog farms are out in Arkansas now. Al Purnell gets all his hogs from there and ships them to Ky. Last time I talked to him (10 years) he was bringing in 300 every day.

I see more horses than anything else at fairs now, and not even real working ones.
Sign of the times, sad to say.

I don't know. He runs the plant and his brother plays golf. I helped build a pole shed so he could separate his cows out. He has two mules or jacks in with them to keep the coyotes away. The pole shed is just to the right of his front porch. I tried to talk him out of some good bologna he made. No dice. He won't fly on an airplane either. He raised his own hogs for a few years.

I think, here anyway, the average age of farmers is 51, my age. Most of our kids are grown. The kids showing have parents that are probably first generation off farm. It is just a lot easier for them to find a place to raise lambs, goats or chickens than cattle. I have two 4H kids (not mine) raising lambs out here. As I am down to one, a senior in high school that is cranker than any bull I have ever seen, it is fun to see the little ones and their enthausium. However, if you have to do it in the back yard chickens and rabbits are the way to go.

I'm in Stark county Ohio, and involved in our county fair. I believe last year we sold around 64 lambs, the same in goats, well over 300 hogs, about 150 steers and close to 200 dairy beef feeders. Dollar wise we set a new record selling $564,000.00. We have increased the number of projects for the fourth year in a row. Pretty amazing for the economic condition out their. There are alot of small farms in the county and the kids find adults that are will to help. I guess that is the key having adults that a willing to support with money and sweat.
