Do any of you use an older IH 1600 loadstar truck to hall grain? If so you can tell me the empty wieght of the truck if you have a 12-16ft dump bed on it? I have a chance to buy an older complete unit for scrap price. I need to know the apprx weight of it.
Thank you! John B.
I ran this in the classic truck colum but didn"t get any response so I thought I would post it here.

I can't but, if were me I'd just run it to my local truck stop, quarry or farm feed supplier with scales and weigh it. May cost you a couple bucks but at least it it will be accurate. Good luck.

We had a IH 170 series( 1952 I think) in the mid-1950s with a flat bed on it. As best as I can remember, it's empty weight was about 7500 lbs. That was over 50 years ago and off the top of my head, so take it with a grain of salt. C.L.

I want to say thanks for all of you who passed on your information. It will help me decide if I want to buy the truck or not. I would run it across the scales but I have to have it towed after I buy it.

8 to 9 thousand is probably on target.
Remember that scrap price should be determined by what would be paid at the yard. If raw with fluids and tires wood etc, it will be less than if it were to be prepared. Getting it to the yard also costs! Jim

This is kinda cool both medium duty trucks mentioned were made within 5 miles of my house and I probably know somone who had a part in building them I'm not sure that is all good because I've none a few bowling nights that some of those boys shouldn't have been making anvils the next day. :-> I know it's kinda unrelated to the topic but I did know the top field service tech for them that could probably quote the base truck weight before bed and hydraulics within a pound or two but I'm not sure he still survives.I remember one night a dealer shop mechanic from KS called while we were out in his farm shop quaffing down a couple brewskies wanting to know how to adjust a carb on a 1600 he spent an hour on the phone doing it by memory. The guy called back about two hours later and said she runs like a Swiss watch. Them good old boys are gone now and it's young engineers by computer. Sorry guy just having a good ole flashback. CT

This is out 1967 1600 with a 304 and 4 speed. Box is 16' and will hold 225-250bu when loaded basically level with the top of sides. Tare weight is 9350lbs.

Thinking of selling it if anyone is interested.

e,

After all the work you did, I'd be too proud to sell if I was you.

I looked at your photobucket dozen, and you have done impressive work!!

Son has a similar 1600, but it is a 1964 model and a lighter duty truck than yours. I have driven full loads of beans but don't dare go over 45 as the steering is pretty loose. Without power steering, and that fairly primitive Ross gearbox, it is a challenge. But with yours being newer, maybe they had gone to a better steering gear box by then.

I think I could come to love that old binder. I do have a warm spot in my heart for those trucks.

Don't get me wrong, I love that truck and someday will likely own another. It's the 3rd loadstar I've owned. The brakes are 100% new everyway you look at it with stainless brake lines all around. It has new springs and overloads front and back. New bearings and seals on both axles and virgin radials on all four corners. And it only has 64k on the ticker.

Problem is, we just don't run it enough. Now that we have a 3/4 ton, I'm looking at getting a dump box for that so I have fewer motors to maintain.

Well I use a 77 Loadstar 1800 with a tag. Also have a friend that has a late 60's 1600 SA. Mine has kinda been through the mill but the last owner put in a new engine, clutch and trans before I got it. Does the job for me. Buddies, the last owner kept it waxed and looks like a near new one, I think he is the second owner. within the first year he got to put in a transmission, rear end, and realized the engine needed a rebuild.

OK nuff of war stories.

SA trucks will hold 300 BU max. Not much use for them around here for that reason. My 1800 with tag hauls 550 and it is small but works for me.

IH made some good utilitarian trucks. Hold onto your shorts when you have to go to navistar for parts though. The brake basics you can get at NAPA etc but there are some specialized fittings that you have to go OEM to get and that is getting iffy for these older trucks even.

As to weight. We had a Ford C700 SA Tare was right at 10,000. Tare on my LS 1800 is either 14000 or 16000.
