Garden Tractor Battery

I have a Continental garden tractor battery that I bought new Jan 09. It is on my welder and went out to start the welder and it wouldn"t turn it over. Checked it with a meter and it shows 12 volts. Put charger on it and it says it is a bad battery. Starter has always worked good on the welder. Are these batteries typically only good for a year or two? And how long is the warranty good for on these? I am thinking only for year on the warranty.
 
Most lawn mower battery's your lucky to get a full year out of one, but I have gotten more but not often. Now on a thing like a welder I would just use a car/truck battery and be done with it plus you can always use it in a tractor when not using the welder
 
Are you serious! lucky to get 1 year! I'v got a EXmark lazerZ from 05 with the same battery in it. I mean its used commercialy 5 days a week starting it up, to 20+ x a day! If we cut 20to 24 lawns a day. Then it sits for 4 months. I also have had no problems with walmart, cutting edge batteries.
 
Got a MC that only gets rode about once a year. Usually have to replace the battery each year. Got a solar battery tender on it now, we'll see..

Jay, it's probably because it's used every day and kept charged. I've never had good luck with lawn mower batteries either, but they sit inactive for 7-8 months and I forget to throw a charge in them once-in-awhile. Some machines with small engines might shake the battery to death too. Jim
 
.........and that is why I have float chargers from Walmart $19 each on each battery that has to sit over winter....batteries last looooooong time.
 
Batts are fickle. Do what they want. Luck of the draw. Try for good warranty. 95 Mustang, had since new, batt replaced almost every year. Is in storage with various types of batt tenders, etc. Walmart is good. They will only sell the cheaper batt to me. Super job is not available for this car. They must know something. Motorcycles 50 - 50 some every year - some 3 or 4 even. Lawn tractor have one that is 5 years old and was not new at that time. Fill em, charge em, clean terminals and hope for the best. Dave
 
I think the lawn mower battery Gary has is a the smaller one Cost $20-$30 with 1 year warrenty. My 1862 Cub Cadet takes a car battery and I get 6 years from a 6 year warrenty battery
 
Well I never looked at it that way, maybe useing them so much it keeps them charged, and ok. I thought useing them that much would run them out faster and make them go bad, stupid thought on my part I guess. lol.. J
 
Mine sit out in a cold barn on all my mowers and every spring they start. 9 x outta 10 they die in the middle of the summer, just go bad I guess. I have never charged any battery not being used in the winter, and found one dead in the spring.
 
I'll put it to you this way.... I was at the NAPA store a couple weeks ago getting a U1LM (probably what you need). They told me that the local lawn tractor/small engine dealer buys 80 (yes, eighty) of those batteries every spring and he's not a real big shop.
The batteries are basically junk. That said, I've gotten probably 3 years out of the current one I use on a feed cart and it sits for several months in the summer. Never charged, maintained or anything else. Might be simple luck. I dunno...
Many times I've seen those batteries last less than 1 year.

It is the day in day out type thing that makes them last. If used only once a week for say 2-3 hour and then let sit again is why most do not last. But who mows there yard every day other then some one making $$ doing so
 
Well think about it. A car that is used daily doesn't have much problem with there battery but one that is used say 2 times a month can/will just like a tractor you use maybe once a month it is the one most likely to not start when you want it to
 
I also have a Grasshopper that's five or six years old with the original battery. Never has failed to start. It's a gell cell. Thinking they were the cat's meow, I put a gell cell on my old Wheel Horse, and it lasted about 13 months. 12 month warranty. Replaced it with an elcheapo lead acid LM battery, and it's about 18 months old and still strong. I can't figure them out. . .

I use one of Walmart's car battery's in my garden tractor and it has the starter/generator. The battery is now 8 or 9 years old. I have 2 of Walmarts batteries in other vehicles and they're about the same age. Hope they don't all fail at once. They're about $75.00 now with an exchange battery. Hal
PS: I never received very good service from any of those garden tractor battery's. I use one of Walmarts motorcycle battery's on my Troy Bilt tiller and it is almost 4 years old.
 
I maintain 28 12 volt and about 10 6 volt batteries in various pieces of equipment: snowmobiles, tractors, cars, boats, motor cycle, four wheeler, moped, electric truck, etc. I put an ounce of hydrogen peroxide in the cells once a year and it really seems to help. Still end up replacing a few a year. As a side note, I have a small motorcycle size battery that is now in the wave runner, that is 15 years old and holds a charge all winter. Last summer the wave runner only went out twice.
 
If you have a AUTOZONE in your area, check out their 425 Cranking AMP L/G battery. They last me on average about 4 years. The only thing I install when working on someone elses machine.

Here's a picture of my garden tractor with that Walmart battery. I had to use a battery with the side mount connections since the hood would hit the batteries with the vertical posts. I had to replace the positive battery cable too. Hal

Did you try charging it, for a long time, it may be OK. I buy what ever is on sale for $20 and usually get 5 years out of them. Can't let the go dead and sit that way, though, especially in MN!
 
It's hearting to know that I'm not the only one that has a hard time starting those old Briggs. Belt is an interesting method.
