Hey folks,
Anyone know of a program or free site that will let you scan pictures and be able to use them as JPG to post here7store without being over 1 MB in size and still good quality? I've got a bunch of pics that I'd like to share that I've taken here over the years.

If youre talking about scanning paper photos you have, YOU NEED A SCANNER. They usually come with their own software so you can lay the picture down and scan it then crop etc and save it in a JPG/JPEG file format. Mine is a "flatbed" all in one Scan/Copy/Fax and you can pick them up at Sams or Waly World or Ofice Depot or Office Max or Staples ete etc often way under $100. I saw a Canon all in one for $44 at Wally World and an HP all in one at Sams for $55.

For free photo editing software try Picasa, it used to be a free easy quick download off the net but the scanner you buy will have some.

With out a scanner, an easy way is to build a copy stand for your digital camera (from the looks of your images, your camera is OK for the task)
A easy solution is to buy a clamp on camera mount ("C" clamp with a pivot and 1/4"X20 threads for the camera base)
Ues a small stool or bench for a holder, and place the images (photos) on a flat surface to take the pictures. (the camers needs to auto focus to 500mm or so)
A piece of non reflective glass (from a frame or glass store) to hold the photos flat can help.
The least expensive professional grade software (which I use) is Corel Photopaint. It is also intuitive to use. A guide is important to get started.
In the US the software is about 150$ US
The entire Suite of Corel Graphics with illustration and screen capture modules is ~400.
Corel 14 is current. Jim

How well does Faststone work? I know that it's a free download. I know that Picasa has limited editing functions.

Most of what you need to do has to be done on your PC. You have to:
1. Scan the image
2. Store in a format that a web browser can view, and which is acceptable to a hosting site like photobucket.
3. Possibly clean the image up.
4. Possibly compress the image.

Your scanner should have come with software for use on Windows or Mac. For Linux machines, the standard scanner software is SANE, which supports pretty much any scanner. Scan your image and save it. Your software should support multiple formats, such as PNM, TIFF, JPEG, GIF or PNG. For pictures, JPEG is the first choice, while for line art use GIF or PNG.

There are a couple of freeware tools you can use to clean up or compress images. The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a very powerful tool for image editing, similar to photoshop. ImageMagick is a set of command-line utilities that are very useful for compressing and/or converting images.

Once you have an image that looks good in your browser, and has been compressed to a reasonable size (say 100 KB or less), you can upload to a site like PhotoBucket so you can link it into a message.
