Home Made Wine

My Dad used to make wine in a glass gallon jug with a baloon on top. Anyway, wife bought a wine recently that reminded me of the stuff dad used to make and i thought about making it myself. Any of you got a recipe using a similar setup? The stuff Dad made would not keep long on the shelf so any advice on storage would be great too. Thanks guys.

like he said,..krause, they are the best people to deal with i have found, freindly, super fast shipping and they have what you need

The ballon was just an air trap while it is working you need to let the co2 expand but not let air in. I use a carboy depending on how much fruit you have or how much wine you will be making it has a small neck and you can buy a water air trap for about $2 and a rubber cork that will go in the top then you dont have a ballon swelling and well if it breaks you wine could be ruined or at least different that should have been. I don"t know your location but I buy my supplies at Von Klopp Brew shop in Pine Island,MN http://www.pinecheesemart.com/ more ? DJ

I recommend the white predrilled corks over the black ones. They cost a tad bit more, but I think the black ones leave a taste in some types of wine.

EC Krause has a cheap little book that has recipes for every kind of wine that you could imagine. Even onion wine and tomato wine - UGH. They also sell a very well written book (British author) that explains the whole process very well.

The airlock is important. Keeps the fruit flies out.

Use about 2# sugar per gallon, an actual winemakers yeast(not stuff for bread) and you should have a good wine. I've been doing it for years. There's a lot of other stuff you can get at any winemakers shop to help clarify etc. Usee Camden tablets to sterilize containers and kill stray bacteria.

Making wine is easy. Making [i:b9af806aa9]good[/i:b9af806aa9] wine is a another thing. Most of the "balloon" recipes aren't much better than prison wine. That being said I've made a lot of small batches of wine from grocery store fruit juice that turned out really well. There's a lot more information required to make a nice wine than what can be put into a few paragraphs on a tractor forum. Google "winemaking" and you'll see what I mean.
