Well the on going coons verses cats

Well as of tonight it is 10 cats zero coons. I have tried molasses corn, peanut butter and stopped the cat food and dog food but still get cats. Well maybe the 3 coons I shot at didn't know enough to just roll over and die when shot so they instead ran off and found a bucket to kick.

Start shooting all the cats that you catch in the trap and pretty soon you will start catching coon. LOL. I hope you win your battle. Maybe some land mines will do the trick.

Have you tried the marshmellows yet..??

Usually, a cat will not be caught more than once (each)..!!

Good Luck...!!

I'm enjoying the heck out of this. You are trying to catch an animal that has the intelligence of a small monkey. Coons are one of the smartest of animals. They can open simple locks and remember a combination of moves to open something. Be careful because they will attack if pushed to far. I imagine the fact that you shot at them will keep them away. I have heard of them eating cats. Post a picture if you do catch one.

lol, im wondering if the coon is kin to that little boogie gopher on caddyshack, he kept on living even through c-4 explosives, nothing could faze it

Ya I sort of understand coons since way back when ya maybe way way back when I had one for a pet. He would walk on a leash and was pretty much a combo dog/cat sort of animal. Had him till one day the lock froze and I could not lock his cage and he learned it was not locked and let him self out and that was pretty much the last we saw him

Seems the coons mindset was he was jailed rather than a pet that you made him out to be; such as a dog or cat that will stick around without being caged.

I also like these post you have been making. You are dealing with a very smart animal in the first place; and the cats are locked in the trap before the coon even gets a chance to be caught.
You may never catch a coon with that set up.

When I was a youngster, growing up in Pike Co. Illinois, there were always a local bunch of coon hunters ruinning the woods in fall and winter. OLD ain't you got any of them in your area?

I must've had some of the stupidest coons on the planet. Used a live trap (no bait at all). Set it next to the building in the run from the cat food pan. They follow the edge of the building and walked right in. Catch skunks and opossums this way also. Even the occasional cat. Course you need a wall that they run along for this to work.

Good luck Old

Want a good fer nothin' coon hound? we got a hundred pounder here that sleeps on the living room chair all day. Oh, he's ok actually.
Are you sure the coons are still around? As someone else has posted, find some local boys who run hounds.... I suspect it would not be too hard to persuade 'em to give it a go. Great fun! when I was young, my 4-H leader had hounds and we would go. It was sure to be an interesting night every time out!
Use that corn, but keep it fresh!

I'm getting worried about the coon population, Old may have killed all but one on earth. I haven't seen one here in awhile. Old's book HOW I KILLED ALL THE RACOON"S may be written from a jail cell. LOL

As suggested before I like peanut butter and marshmellows. Usually catch a cat or 2 when I first start trapping but you must have cats that are looking for punishment.

Is your trap big enough? If I get a smart one I surround the trap with square bales. You could try that and feed the cats extra good tonight.

I got them back in the barn getting into my cat food again. Time for me to start trapping.

Sounds like to me the cat population is way to thick also. It must need thinning out too.

Coon hunters are pretty scarce around here. Hides must be cheap. . .

When the hides were up, every farm around had a hound or two.

I always encourage the coon hunters to set the hounds out close to the house. Might as well get the troublemakers first.

Iowa rep. Steve King uses a Desert Eagle at his house. He tweeted about it and got peta all riled up. They said "the coon only wanted to come in and get warm after all".

I had marshmallows in it and last night added peanut butter but got nothing over night. I have it set on my porch since that is where I also had target practice with the 44mag still thinking my target practice was more then practice and where in fact hits that may have left them dead after running off

I have a neigbhor that only uses sardines, puts the whole can in, be carful not to get it under the step. He always has either coons, skunks, and cats in there. sounds like you have too many seat warmers out there. LOL it seems I always have little paw prints on my tractor seats and hoods out in the shed.

Maybe the cats figure the safest place to be is in the trap where the coon can"t get to them. lol :)

My old ecology teacher in High School used to use black jelly beans to trap them. He worked part time for the DNR and would put radio collars on a few coons for us to track in class.

But where they the real black one or the dark purple ones?? I know it they where the true BLACK ones NO coon will ever get them. I have looked all over the place for them because that is one of the few candy s I like and the black ones are licorice

You might have to sacrifice a few of your black ones then- because that's what he used. Not too many people around here like the black ones that I know of, me included.

Seems coons have a bit of a sweet tooth. I think that's also why it works to give them a little Coke with some fly bait in it. We've only ever gotten varmint (coon, skunk, possum) with that mix, never a cat or any other domestic.
