What size Battery

I need to get a replacement barrery for my MF-65. It is a 12V system. Will getting one with higher cranking amps burn the points or cause any damage. Or does a larger battery just provide a bigger reserve.

Jeff

CCA or cold cranking amps is a number that says the larger it is in theory the long longer it can spin and engine over before running down on you. So it has no effect on the points in any way. Just measure your battery box and buy as big a battery as will fit in. Oh and if you have not gotten a battery in a while hold on tight since it seems like battery prices have doubled in less then a year

Jeff:

CCA is kind of like money and horse power: Some's good and more's better.

Theres no need to worry about points life difference if choosing between a high capacity versus a lower capacity storage battery. If cold weather starting is important Id buy the biggest heaviest highest Amp/Hr or CCA rated battery avaiable that physically fits into the storage box. I would use the protective felt washers on the battery posts and then a coat of that red battery terminal protectant will insure good corrosive free long term service.

Things that help points life is a good and the correct sized condensor and keeping them adjusted along with the correct coil and/or coil and ballast combination is a must such that the current the points have to switch isnt higher then normal.

The last flyer from L&M had Exide 850 cca. 60 month for $62, that's not too bad, I get a JD parts catalogue every winter and most of theirs were over $100, are they worth the extra? We have an L&M 6v in our JDM for about 7 years now, might need replacing this year.

Besides adding cranking time, a bigger battery also raises cranking voltage and makes the engine spin faster. A 12 volt system is usually designed to crank at 9.5 volts. A bigger battery can raise that to 10 or 10.5 volts, which can make a big difference with faster cranking.

Not always. A little less cranking amps in the same size battery will have thicker plates and handle vibration better. I have an 8D battery in my Cat with 1250 cca. I could have got a 1400 cca but the guy at the battery specialty place said the 1250 is a heavier duty battery and will last longer. I should add that an 8D is a huge battery for a 65 HP engine. Thanks guys.

That is all what I thought. I used a couple of 650 amp car batteries that I had and they seemed to run down and need charging. Particularly on a hard winter start.

I take a completely DOA battery and recycle the core for a new car battery when it was getting weak then used the old car battery on the tractor. Now that old battery is DOA and I got a 1000CA/880CCA battery last night. Works like a charm.

Highest CCA anti vibration battery that will fit in the battery box.
Use new 00 cables and run the chassis return to a starter mounting bolt. You will be pleasantly surprised at the starting power.
