Hello-

I have a ford 2000 tractor lgt165 seiral numbers are 21022A 0154737. I have not been able to use it because it is way to fast to do any work with
and unsafe even if it is in first gear. Is there any way to slow it down, like a ring and pinion
and where could i find the parts.

What does LGT 165 mean? Lawn and grarden tractor? 165?

Its obviously not the hydrostatic verison. Its is a lawn and garden tractor LGT. There is a good Yahoo group for them.

I've got a lot of old sales lit for them, had little loaders and backhoes. 3 point hitches etc.

Can't help you on the slow down, not sure if it has ranges.

LGT =Lawn and Garden Tractor
16?=16Hp.
??5=Hydrostat
It should have a high and low range, and speed is adjusted by the amount of travel on foot pedal. The further you push down the faster it goes. If it pushes hard, check all the linkages and free them up and lubricate.

I agree with John730D"s comments.
The 5 in 165 denotes Hydostatic drive.
I do not understand your reference to 2000; unless this is a later model Ford with the same designation as the earlier ones.
The original LGT series tractors were built by Jacobsen in the 70s and early 80s and were VERY good machines.

Fond some old picturs of the tractor. it is not a lgt 165. this is a 1966 ford 2000. some old lgt 165 fenders where lying on the tractor. Sorry. It is a gear problem, not a gass pedel issue.

So it is a 1966 2000. It there a possibility that it has a Sherman over under trans. It would be a curved handle on the left of the ahead of the transmission. If so the lever moves ahead and back and may also slide in and out depending on the model. There are other brands and models of over drives as well.

At the risk of insulting your knowledge, are you sure it is not in first gear and high range? Even without a Sherman trans. that tractor should have 2 gear shifts- the long one is for the gear selection, and the shorter one is for high and low range. If it is in high range, it will certainly be too fast for a lot of tasks.

Dont know when Ford went to the new model 2000 if that is what you have. What do you have for a transmission. We had a Ford 2000,3 cyl gas,ps,lpto and a 4x2 trany. 8spds fwd. 2 revese It would run pretty slow in 1st.gear

(quoted from post at 19:28:42 02/15/10).... this is a 1966 ford 2000....

The post 1965 3 cylinder engined model 2000's were an economy price leader model back when new. A lot of them only had the 4 speed transmission, non-Live PTO, and no power steering, or differential lock - although these things could be upgraded as options. However, many people simply opted to go with the 3000 instead of adding the options to the 2000 as many of these features were standard on the 3000. (The 2000 and 3000 use the same engine)

I agree that the 4 speed tranny is way too fast in both 1st gear and reverse for my liking. My MIL has one and I hate it for this reason. My suggestion would be to try and find a parts donor tractor that has the 8 speed transmission which is an extremely durable transmission providing you with 8 forward gears and 2 reverse gears. Whatever you do stay away from the SOS 10 speed which is not well regarded.

Another alternative option would be to exchange the rear tires with smaller diameter tires to slow it down that way, but this is a less than elegant solution.
