Re: Chip Foose 4020

John Deere won't make a combine for the normal American farmer. I've ran John Deere my entire life, but they've told me through their combines how unimportant I am. The 9870 and 9770 are designed to allow one operation to run 5000 acres. The 9670 is about right for 2500 acres and the 9570 is too big for a guy farming 1000. It would be nice if they made something for a "normal" midwestern operation. Theres not even a 4 row head anymore. Oh well, they don't want anyone smaller than 1500 acres anymore.

Don't know that I've ever posted anything that would cause someone to complain and get a thread deleted; I'm half a mind to do so, here. Just saying...........

As much as I hate the Foose custom, I think it may be good for the value of the tractors we all own. You never know, pretty soon it may be the Barrett-Jackson tractor auction. Guys with too much money buying overpriced toys.

I"m not normally a big JD fan but I will have to admit that the 4020 is something comparable to a big sports team that seems to have the right things all come together to win the big ones year after year until it finally get"s surpassed by the competition. It was very nimble for it"s horsepower yet could pull some fairly large implements and yet could manuver around tight barnlots with a manure spreader. IMHO truly a tractor for the ages no matter the color.

Hell, Thurlow. No time to be bashful. I got deleted yesterday when I was actually paying my respects. Possibly got deleted again today. I have to go check. Come on in. The water's fine. (;>))

Sorry, rrlund, I didn't want to butt in like that but sometimes I can't resist responding to my old phriend, Thurlow. (;>))

You didn't hear about this? Go to the JD website and check it out. Here we are in the biggest depression since the 30's and your favorite(and sometimes mine) farm machinery manufacturer goes off and pays some car styling guy to doctor up a perfectly good farm tractor and make it look like a lawn mower. How much did it cost them. What does it matter? They'll make millions on tee shirts and videos and appearances. "Conflict Makes News". They've learned their lessons well but I'll tell you what! I'm shopping for a new tractor. Something like a 6430 Premium, but after this the CIH Maxxum 110 is looking better and better and now they're throwing in a free loader with the deal. Wouldn't it have been better for Deere to do something like that instead of spending $$$$$$$ on this nonsense. Well, that's my rant for the day. Cheers.

I see you're still stockpiling "Fs"; be a lot easier to help save 'em if I gnu what you were planning to do with them.............

buickanddeere,in modern view it shows you are the author of this thread, are you trying to pull a fast one? aka Big Buck 4020 Team.LOL

Book says 4020s were made 1968 to 1972 so the 4020 under discussion could be 40 years old. I do remember them being sold 40 year ago. Never owned one and haven't seen the picture mentioned so don't have a dog in this fight.

KEH

I can't believe the response of some to this Foose tractor. It is just a machine guy's they are not molesting the Holy Grail or anything like that. If John Deere's marketing department thought this project was a good promotion who are you to object? Next time you are at Deere and Co's shareholder meeting, stand up amd say something. What? Oh! You are not a stockholder? Oh well I guess you have no valid objection to what someone does to his property then.

Not a JD guy but have sorta followed the Foose 4020 thing.
When Mr Foose is finished with it if the tractor will still perform the tasks it was designed to do when new I'll be happy with it.
And if it comes to the Twin Cities on the tour I would go see it. Maybe they'll have hot dogs.
How many hours was on the tractor when you started by the way? 40 years without having to repair the components you mention is pretty good.

I hope the Big Buck 4020 team can take a little const. crit. What they should be promoting, instead of the line of utility tractors that arn't selling well; is a ("2010" JD 4020) A 1972" 4020 with a few modern improvments like better cab, improved hyd. & elec. system and heavier wide front.. But still the same dependable 4020 farmers still need today! If Deere started selling a 4020 remake, the only tractor in Deere history that would have sold more numbers is the original 4020!! And to promote it they could give away a Gator or Buck 4 wheeler; a loader for it!!People would respond positivly to THAT!!!!
P.S. I'd drive 400 mi. to see a showing of a 2010" 4020 >>>...

I just wonder if some of Foose's many fans may go look at this finished project and scratch thier heads asking, what was this designed to do? They just may find out through their research it was used in food production. It just might be worth all the money they spend and the time the team puts in if the right young man or woman comes to realize their food really doesn't start in a grocery store, but the store is only a place to buy it. This build may just end up being more significant than some of you want to realize. Chip, thanks for branching out into a new challenge. Thanks, Gary

Not to object Combines, but name any other company that makes anything smaller then Deere. As far as the other Chip Foose 4020 complaints,SO WHAT,JD is into marketing and that is why they are in the position they are.Only surviving tractor co.left.

Seems like they're just building for the market that's out there. At least in wheat, nobody under 1500 acres could afford a new combine, regardless of size. They're the guys who buy the trade-ins from the 5,000 acre guys who are buying the new ones.

The Chip Foose 4020 is nothing but easy advertising for Deeres new utility tractors and to get people into JD dealers. There target audience with this promotion are hobby farmers, wanna-be tractor collectors, hot rodders, and large farmers. JD today is out of touch with small to medium size crop and livestock FARMERS. Ain't it something that JD considers tractors with upto 166 hp to be utility tractors. This sure puts us, who are trying to make a living FARMING with 10 & 20 series tractor, out.

The big buck team's # is 192.43.65.245 . On that day mine was 209.240.117.112 .
You can't get numbers much different than that.

Here is a simple bare bones plan jane 100pto HP tractor which is the 2010 4020.

You sound like a brainwashed deere dealer salesman , who atended to many company salesman, training classes..the 6D series tractor are south of the boarder make, JUNK! I rented a 6130D for 2 days last fall to run silage chopper, my 4320 was down with pump & injecter repair; it has 12,000 hours on orginal sleves & pistons it is 3 times the tractor the 6130; little 4-276 engine

;

is 1/3 the tractor the 404 engine is in the 20 series! ... dealer offered it to me for 35% of cost, he's had it a long time, he said he like to trade it my 4020 or 4320 he could sell them tomorrow .. THAT'S my point..

Amen buddy, buickanddeere wants everybody to buy a New plastic JD to replace a dependable used tractor BUT WON'T BUY ONE HIMSELF!!!!!!!!!
My friend bought a new 6715 that my 4255 with 9800 hrs will out work.

Opion: JD engineers & executives have had to much of the NEW Math; They need to take a course in Real Farmer (making a living farming) ARITHMETIC!!

Hope they rethink the real meaning of Mr. John Deere's statement: I will not put my name an Implement that does not have in it , the best of that what is in me!
Good thing he can't see what is happening at his company today..

Thanks: Tx Jim ; JD 55 series tractors where one of the last "Real Farmer" tractors JD built ; I've got a 4055 and really like it.. 4255 are a nice size(do it all) tractor for the farmer with a Quarter Section land & livestock...

Jim. Get that ticket bought so we can set the delivery date. I know how much you want to be the 4th person to drive that shinny new M4WD.

I recall back in the day when the 4010 and 4020's were replacing the Deere two cylinder tractors.
The old coots were weeping and wailing over the pending failure of the Deere Company. They also complained about all the expensive complicated new fangled stuff on the tractors that wasn't needed. Mulitple scv's, cab's, rops, diff lock, PS three point hitch etc.
Complaints were heard how the new tractors wasted fuel, sounded terrible and wouldn't "pull as much". No way they could last as long either.
Now the decedents of those sobbing over the passing of the two cylinders and those (*&%^*& new generation tractors. The decedents are now raving over the virtues of the New Generation and Generation Two tractors. Vs. those crummy new plastic 2010 era tractors.
Lets just wait another 20 years for what the next generation says? Care to guess?

I've already explained this to you once so I'll shout this time. I DON'T FLY & YOU WON'T BUY A NEW MFWD. GOT IT??????????

I've got a ???????? for your since you push for people to buy new JD's' If the engineering is so fantastic why do so many JD 6000 & 7000 size cab tractors catch on fire? I know of several around here and one sees ads about these burnt JD models. Make a farmer not want to park one in a barn.

You are afraid to fly?
Rapid oxidation/fire occurs when the combustion tetrahedron exists.
Fuel, oxygen, ignition temp and chemical reaction are required for fire.
Eliminate any of those and the tractors don't burn. Solution is simple.

Hey: TX Jim; Seeing that buickanddeere likes to fly so much, lets fly him on "an all expence paid" vacation to a 40 cow North Dakota, Dairy farm, Where he can ware real farmer shoes & spend one wk. milking, feeding,& cleaning up after cows,in -20 temp. with 20mph wind; he'll only have to keep running, 2 silo unloaders,1 tmr mixer,1 feed grinder, 1 barn cleaner,& 1 manure spreader.. oh and move snow. and best part is he'll get a check for the wk., for 140 hundred weights of milk @ $12 ea. only to find in cost him $14 ea.in expences to produce milk.. Do you think that vacation mite help to start his attitude ajustment?

I already live in the middle of freezing cold nowhere and know all the joys there of.
As a teenager I turned around my Parent's farrow to finish operation and made it quit profitable. It's the reason why they retired in comfort.
As poverty, uncertainty and stress are all over rated as being biblical advice from some pulpits. And the basic ingredients for country music.
The solution was a steady paycheque and hobby farm. I was able to loose money on the oats last year with the best of them. And enjoy rural life.

"As usual you're again not answering my ??????????? about you buying a MFWD"

Never said I'm afraid to fly as I've flown numerous times.

I JUST DON"T HAVE A DESIRE TO FLY just as EVIDENTLY you don't have a DESIRE to spend the $$$$$$ that you try to PERSUADE other readers on this Forum on numerous OCCASIONS to spend on a new JD MFWD.

I've got to go shovel some snow now so I guess in your opinion I should go buy a MFWD for this once in my life record snowfall!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You Texans must be awful soft to have to shovel a little snow way down south there. I drive my old 2WD around ok in the snow up here.

When it comes to SNOW i have no desire to deal with it as I dislike snow unlike you !!!!!!!!!!! If that's soft so be it!!!!!!!

You have a talent for wrong interpretations of my statements.

I didn't buy the MFWD as you probably haven't either but my snow has melted!!!!!!!!!!
