Rusted out fertilizer auger

My fertilizer auger to fill the planter from a gravity box doesn't last too long even though I dump it out after planting. Most of the time I have even ran oil through it. Orbit motor is good. I wonder if anyone has rebuilt or made one with heavy 6" PVC pipe or have any other ideas?

I bought mine used and it was in worse shape than it originally appeared. after a couple years use, went to a dealer and bought a replacement tube and auger. About 35% cost of new. I run water thru it and later after it dries, run oil. Seems to work good. Better plan would be to run oily sand after the washing, but decided too much work/mess.

We made one for a cross auger one time out of PVC, we put the poly flighting in it. The flighting had a steel or maybe stainless shaft inside the poly for strength. Won't rust out and the poly on poly won't wear enough to worry about. Sorry I don't remember where we got the flighting for sure. Use a big PVC elbow or T for the top and bottom.

I bought one on a sale several years ago on a wagon. I pulled the auger out of the tube to inspect. The flighting was already very thin so I reflited it with new. Now every year I pull it apart after planting and pressure wash it then oil it up. The fliteing still looks like new with very minor surface rust. The key to any fertilizer equipments long life is to wash it up good after use then oil it.

Most fertilizers are far more corrosive than salt water. Back when fertilizer was bagged, they used auger trucks to load airplanes for fertilizing rice. The auger and hopper was washed down completely every few days, as was the Stearman aircraft. I don't know what your water supply is, but it helps extend the life of the equipment. Stainless steel helps also, but may not be practical in many applications.
